NEW DAY Impala to replace Monte Carlo By Greg Engle Sporting News NASCAR Wire Service, October 26
General Motors will begin phasing out its popular Monte Carlo in 2007 and replace it with the Impala SS, Chevrolet confirmed Wednesday.
The Impala will be GM's vehicle of choice by 2009 The phase out will coincide with the introduction of the Car Of Tomorrow. The Impala will be the model Chevrolet will use for its version of the COT. The COT will debut at Bristol in February and compete in 16 races in 2007. The COT will then run in 26 events in 2008, before going full time in the series in 2009.
The Monte Carlo first came into NASCAR in 1971 and ran until 1988 when it was replaced by the Lumina. It was reintroduced to NASCAR in 1995.
The new Impala SS will be unveiled Friday at Atlanta Motor Speedway. The Monte Carlo will continue to be fielded in the Busch Series.
