Repaving Begins at The Glen: The 2006 season concluded at The Soul of American Road Racing on October 1 and by October 2 a major repaving project began in preparation for an exciting 2007. The concrete sections in Turn 1 and Turn 5 have been removed to begin a capital improvement project that was announced by track officials this past June. The track will undergo a series of repaving projects to address issues with water and drainage along the concrete sections of the racing surface, while new competition curbing will also be added to two more turns along the 3.4 mile road course. The project began this week with the removal of the concrete sections in Turn 1, also known as the 'Ninety', and Turn 5, or the 'carousel turn'. Final pieces of concrete in Turn 5 were removed today
SJK1976: while the base for each turn is expected to be put down this weekend. In the coming weeks, both the repaving and milling of the asphalt in Turns 1, 5 and 6 will take place. Once the repaving has been completed, the asphalt curbing in both Turn 5 and Turn 6 will also be replaced with new FIA curbing. Additional paving projects are expected to be announced later this month. While the track is already accepting 2007 ticket renewal orders, tickets for the entire 2007 season will go on sale December 2. That is one month earlier than in the past, and just in time for the holidays. Richmond Construction Update - New Grandstand Taking Shape: Construction crews are hard at work adding to Richmond's skyline, as nearly 1/3 of the framework for Richmond International Raceway's new 7,800-seat, 18-story frontstretch grandstand is now complete. Beams for the lower mezzanine seats and for the stairs leading to the lower mezzanine and club levels are also in place. Workers have also poured the concrete for the elevator shaft and kitchen floors. According to David Wright of Taylor and Parrish, Inc., the lead construction and design company for the project, close to 40 workers are working full-time during this phase. As the work intensifies and the framework nears completion, the workforce will double to nearly 80, as contractors for specialties like electricity and plumbing will be needed.
Some upcoming key milestones and their approximate completion dates include:
November 25: Begin framework of elevator shaft.
November 30: Framework for entire grandstand completed.
December 15: New light poles erected.
The project will be finished in time for the track's NASCAR doubleheader weekend May 4-5, which will include the Crown Royal presents Your Name Here 400 Nextel Cup Series race and the Circuit City 250 Presented by FUNAI NASCAR Busch Series race.
