“Boniface Scores Second Win at Monadnock”

It was “Kayem Hot Dog Night” at Monadnock Speedway, Winchester, NH.,

Saturday night July 29, and for the True Value Modified Racing Series, this one had “the works.”  Winchester’s own Jim Boniface drove the Whitcomb Paving, Kulicks Market, Tan Oasis, #27 to victory in the 100 lap modified feature, his second of the season and fourth career win in modified competition. He also becomes the second driver this year to win two races joining Kirk Alexander in that category. The race, the fourth of five events for the traveling series at the western NH speedway, saw four different leaders, 4 caution flags, a lap 26 red flag for a 10 car pileup on the front straightaway, and a post race teardown of the first and third place finishers that put the race in an “unofficial finish pending inspection” status with an announcement to be made by tour officials at the beginning of the week.

Twenty four modified’s responded to the drop of the green flag with GMH rookie contender Bobby Grigas III, and veteran Monadnock racer Rob Goodenough bringing the field to the start.  Grigas, in the Triple G Scaffolding # 09 jumped into an early lead until he was passed by Ed Dachenhausen, in the P&C Excavating # 48, who took control of the point from lap 4 until lap 17. Goodenough, in the Hawshaw Lumber # 01, wrestled away the top spot after contact with Dachenhausen that forced the Connecticut driver to the pit area. Dachenhausen, came back to finish 12th.  Goodenough set the pace for the next 6 laps with Andy Seuss, fresh off a third place finish at the Seekonk Speedway last Wednesday, in hot pursuit. The young charger, who started fifth on the grid in the Rockingham Boat # 70, floated into the lead on lap 25 and held onto it until the 82nd go around. Boniface, who this week changed his car number to his customary # 27, was fast approaching the leaders and on lap 75 worked his way by Goodenough after going several laps side by side to secure the second spot. With his sights on Seuss, Boniface reeled in the # 70, went wheel to wheel with the leader, and passed him on lap 83 to go on and win the event in front of another large Monadnock crowd.

Seuss settled for second with Goodenough, who sits fifth in the point standings, finishing third, Grigas was fourth, and Les Hinckley, who started 19th and passed the most cars to capture the Sunoco Hard Charger award, finished fifth. Sixth through tenth were Dale Evonsion, Louie Mechalides, Gary Casella, Jimmy Kuhn, and point leader Dwight Jarvis.

The race was marred by a 10 car pileup on lap 26 that brought out the red flag and caused race ending damage to several of the cars involved. Forced to the sidelines were, recent Lee and Seekonk winner Kirk Alexander who was sandwiched between Chris Wenzel and the concrete wall resulting in severe damage done to both cars.  Other racers involved in the  crash that were done for the night included Jack Bateman, rookie Bryan Shumway, Les Mardanes, Jimmy Dolan, Sean Bodreau, and GMH Transportation rookie contender, Karl Fredrickson. Jarvis was involved in the pileup but did a tremendous job to avoid colliding with Hinckley and both were able to continue.

26 cars were on hand to qualify for the 24 starting spots in the Kayem Hot Dog 100. Heat races were won by Hinckley, Goodenough, and Bateman while Bruce Batchelder, in the Leon Holmes Excavating # 77, copped the 15 lap consolation race.

The True Value Modified Racing Series competes in three New England states in the month of August. On Saturday Aug 5, the tour heads to the famed Beech Ridge Motor Speedway, Scarboro, ME, Star Speedway, Epping, NH. Aug 12, Seekonk Speedway, Seekonk, MA. Aug 19, and returns to Monadnock Speedway for the final time in 2006 on Saturday Aug 26.
