Now with all that out of the way.....Let's make some laps!
MARTINSVILLE, VA. -- Kevin Harvick was able to hold off teammate Clint Bowyer at the Martinsville Speedway Saturday to claim the Goody's 250 win. The event marked the return of the series after a 12-year absence fom the Virginia short track. Bowyer, the pole-sitter, was unable to do anything with Harvick despite a string of late race caution flags.
“I had a great car. Clint and myself, we knew Thursday we had really great racecars. We put a lot of effort into this race and I think it paid off,” Harvick said.
There were a record 19 caution flags, four within the final 50 laps of the event. But, the restarts weren’t enough to give Bowyer’s No. 2 Chevrolet the advantage over teammate Harvick’s No. 21.
“It was a good race. The AC Delco Chevrolet was good. All of the guys, not only on my team but the whole Busch shop has been working hard and it’s showing,” he said.
Harvick and Bowyer led the way for the Nextel Cup conglomerate after they flew in from the Pocono Raceway.
Denny Hamlin and Reed Sorenson followed the RCR leaders across the stripe while Johnny Sauter was fifth, showing as the highest finishing Busch regular, non full-time Cup competitor.
While Bowyer, Harvick, Greg Biffle, Carl Edwards and JJ Yeley made it to Martinsville in time to qualify their own machines, Both Hamlin and Sorenson, along with Kyle Busch, had to rely on fill-in drivers to enter their rides. They had to start at the rear of the field for the driver changes.
“With those Childress cars starting where they qualified, they could take it easier than what I could starting in the back,” Hamlin said after finishing third.
“I felt like we were a little better than those guys on the long run but they pulled away for the first five or six laps of a run.”
Carl Edwards followed up his win last weekend in New Hampshire and finished sixth.
John Andretti, a rookie this season for ppc Racing, has claimed a win here before in the Cup Series. He showed his experience level with a strong seventh place run.
Jason Leffler, JJ Yeley and Jay Sauter closed out the top 10 finishers.
Kenny Wallace, the race winner during the series’ last visit to the Virginia short track in 1994, finished 13th.
Darrell Waltrip, an 11-time winner at Martinsville, made his first start in the Busch ranks since 1995. He hopped behind brother Michael’s No. 99 entry but finished a sour 28th.
