Sorry Scott. It is on your list. I read Yankee's list last and didn't see it. Great job you guys. Like WMT said, quite a bit of history there and now we're having trouble keeping 3 tracks in CT,

Annon,
That sounds pretty close, cars stopped racing there in 1968 but maybe motorcycles had a race or two after that.  It is  interesting. because I had never heard of it.

Point Of Interest ------  as stated for Thompson,  to get to the old road course,  you go to the SOUTH end of the parking lot over by where the pit gate is,   there should be a MOUND there, walk over the mound and go straight back about 40 feet in the woods, that should take you on the straight,   it might have very well have been the main straight, annon  could you tell us ?

RE: LOST TRACKS BY STATE

I was young then and can't remember it that well, i just remember the bikes racing early in the afternoon before the regular shows and wondering where the hell they went when they were out on the road course. i know it went along somewhere in the area you are talking, through the back part of the pit area and to the right side of the pit sign in booth. IIRC.

I was just lost as to why they'd leave the track/viewing area and then keep coming back. i was to young to understand the whole deal at the time.

Now that I'm thinking, there is an old stretch of asphalt through the woods back there, why I'd be walking in the woods around the pit gate, I'll never know.

This is what i'm talking about  :)  Toggle through the maps  "aerial/topo"  look at the south end of the parking lot over where the Pit Gate is... and you will see what I mean......    This is as of 1991, but I went walking through the same piece as stated back in 1998 or 1999. Quite a good peice of history. SCCS use to make regular visits there.

RE: LOST TRACKS BY STATE

I have actually taken a walk of the old road-course with some other campground faithfulls. We all stayed over late into Monday following a weekend event.

One section of the straight still has the numbers painted on it where the cars used to start from. They must have started similar to Formula One. Much of the track in still in decent condition. While walking the main straight I could not help to imagine driving it at full speed, must have been one heck of a rush and at some serious speed.

The old road course as I remember was like this. They went down the front chute towards turn four (clockwise), out of three and down the back chute exiting at the point where the cars now enter the track. Then back around the road they use now and I believe it was longer with more turns back then. They then went out the existing pit gate out towards the main road, around the turn (right hander) that is still the road that they use for the parking lot entrance also, straight back to the pits past where the scales are now and re-entered the oval track at the start of turn one back to the start finish line. They closed the entrance in turn one because when the oval races were run sometimes a car would slide into the pits where the welder now parks. The 'walls' in the corners back then were sand banks and once the put in the concrete walls they closed the opening in the first turn and started using the back chute as an entrance and the lift gate for exit. Sometimes in the late '60s early '70s when you get there on Sunday afternoon the vintage road course cars were just finishing, it was cool, but I like the oval better.

Now that is funny Anon! The best part was people wondering why your pant leg's were wet if you miscalculated "crossing the stream" Not that I would know anything about that personally....

OWR & Anon, I think I read about that in the track program also, at least I think that's how I know about the woods & steam.

Back in the '70s, I would go to TIS and work for the M&H truck changing modified tires by hand on those nice warm Sunday afternoons for enough money to get in & buy gas to get there and home. I should rephrase, back in the '70s when I young & stupid, lol. It was hard work but I saw the features for free every week.

Scott, yes, it opens in Word. Nice list, but you missed one old CT track. About 20 years ago there was a track in Baltic, CT. It was torn down and now resides in a box in my cellar. It ran many nights a week for about 4 years in the early 80's.

Just wanted to add that after some research on the old Candlelite Stadium in Bridgeport, racing did occur in 1955. Roger Bailey of Patchogue, LI won the last race on May 1 in a midget feature. After that, the stadium was closed and torn down for a drive-in theater.

E.M. Loew's bought the property in January for $110,000 from Carl Brunetto.

By July, the theater was set to open.

With regards to Cherry Park Speedway I will have to check R.A.'s records. I purchased the program from the last race program from 1954. However, I am told that the race never ran. I am not sure if that particular program was the only race that was attempted during 1954. I will let you know on Tuesday/Wednesday if all goes well.

Manzanita Speedway, one of the few Phoenix-area active short tracks, will run its last race on April 11th after being sold.

Here is the track on Google Maps.

As I have been working on the list the last few days, it has come to my attention that perhaps another list for all the aerials should be created. This list is reaching capacity, and there are tracks to be added. By creating an aerial list, a lot of space would be freed up.
