Now with all that out of the way.....Let's make some laps!
23 year veteran racer Jim Boniface, Winchester, N.H., driving the Whitcomb Paving, Doug’s Auto Body, Batchelder Bros. # 51 modified started on the pole Saturday night, bolted into the lead at the drop of the green flag and went on to win the “Firecracker 100” at Monadnock Speedway in front of a huge holiday weekend crowd, the season’s third appearance of the True Value Modified Racing Series at the greater Keene, N.H., oval. Boniface fought off everything thrown his way from ten caution periods, challenges from Chris Wenzel early on, Jack Bateman midway the race, and then constant pressure from Dwight Jarvis who was within striking distance over the last 40 laps to go on to score the popular win in front of the hometown crowd. Boniface, a truck driver by trade, is no stranger to victory lane. For 20 seasons he raced pro stocks in New England with many victories coming at the Monadnock facility.
The win by Boniface was his first this season and his third career win with the TVMRS tour. His two previous wins came in 2004 at Lee and Star Speedways. He also becomes the fifth different winner in as many races in 2006. In victory lane the victorious Boniface told the standing room only crowd, “I’d like to thank my car owners, the crew, sponsors, my wife, my son Kyle, my daughter Sheena, this is great, winning in a modified at Monadnock, Wow!” With Jarvis in the hunt and with third place finisher Kirk Alexander in tow, Boniface knew he had his hands full right to the checkers. “I knew Dwight was back there, I had to keep it low through the turns or he would have had me, I kept it on the bottom and I figured if he was going to go by me he’d have to do it on the outside, I was a little nervous, I knew he was back there, but Dwight runs ya good, he run’s ya clean.”
For Jarvis it was a blanket finish at the end with the hard charging veteran pressing Boniface to the finish. Said Jarvis, “The car tightened up on the restart at the end, we’d go a few laps and it would loosen up a little, Jim was going real good, would have liked it stay green longer, I think I would have had a better shot at him but that’s the way it goes, he was going good, he deserves it, I knew Kirk was behind me, a clean driver, I knew we weren’t going to have any problems.
Alexander finished in a strong third and had the best seat in the house, watching the Boniface/Jarvis show in front of him. In victory lane the defending champion talked about an ill handling car that made it difficult to reel in the leaders, “we didn’t bend her up tonight, she got a little loose, but we’ll take it, a lot better than the last time we were here, we just keep making progress, we were fighting a tight car in the heats, it was a tough track to get a hold of tonight, a great crowd here, I hope they had a great race to watch.”
Ed Dachenhausen finished fourth with veteran Jack Bateman rounding out the top five. Six through tenth were Jimmy Kuhn Jr., Andy Seuss, Rob Goodenough, GMH Transportation Rookie of the Year contender, Jon McKennedy, and veteran NY racer, Johnny Bush.
Qualifying heats were won by Boniface, David Roys, and Wenzel, while newcomer Bryan Shumway
bested an 11 car field to win the 15 lap consolation race to qualify for his first TVMRS race.
It was a night of firsts on July 1 with veteran Outlaw Pro Stock driver Russ Hersey competing in his first tour race as did Elmer Wing, a former Seekonk Speedway street stock driver. The first ever female driver to compete with the third year tour attempted to qualify at the Monadnock event. 20 year old Marisa Niederauer, Plainedge,N.Y., a regular competitor at Mountain Speedway, St Johns, PA made the trip to Monadnock but failed to make the race after a heat race mishap. Niederauer stated, “The modifieds were not on the schedule at Mountain this weekend so we decided to come up and check this out.” She was the recipient of the Hard Charger award at the PA track for 2005.
The next event for the True Value Modified Series is Friday night July 7 at the 3/8 mi. Lee USA Speedway, Rte 125 Lee, N.H. Race time is 6:45 PM. Gates open at 3 P.M.
