CLAY ROGERS ENTERS PASS SOUTH'S OPENING
EASTER BUNNY 150
Former Hooters Pro Cup Champ is One of the Stars Headed to Hickory
The list of champions from all of the different series that will be competing in next week’s Easter Bunny 150 keeps growing and growing. Accomplished Southern Super Late Model racers Jason Hogan, Freddy Query, Travis Kittleson, Ted Musgrave Jr. and a host of others are already on the list, and now the 2004 USAR Hooters Pro Cup Champion, Clay Rogers, has added his name to the list of stars kicking off the PASS South season at Hickory Motor Speedway on April 15th.
“We decided to go to the PASS South Series race at Hickory because of my long-time friend, crew chief and mentor, Bill Boger,” said Rogers, who won the season-opening event for the USAR Hooter Pro Cup Series Northern Division last week at South Boston Speedway (VA). “He has always loved racing Super Late Models. Towards the end of the year, last year, he bought a Super Late Model and wanted to go to the Snowball Derby, and we went down there and ran third. Then we went to Speedfest and ran second both nights.
“We heard they were starting up the PASS South Series and we figured we would go run some races when we could; just go out and race for fun and get back to what it’s all about to begin with.”
While Rogers’ focus this year remains with the USAR Hooters Pro Cup Series, whenever his schedule allows the opportunity, Rogers plans on racing with the PASS South Series as much as possible.
“We want to run all of the races we can, just as long as it doesn’t hold us back with our Hooters Cup deal,” added Rogers. “I’ve heard a little bit about PASS North and South. I don’t know a lot of the drivers; I know a lot of the guys that normally run it came down and ran Speedfest and the Snowball Derby. I am assuming a lot of the Southern Late Model guys will be at Hickory and I’m sure Freddy Query will be there.”
The North Carolina native has had experience racing on Hickory in many different series. Aside from his previous NASCAR Busch, Truck and Super Late Model experience, he grew up racing the Allison Legacy Series at Hickory. Most recently, his laps around Hickory have come with the USAR Hooters Pro Cup Series, which has two annual races at the historic North Carolina track.
“It’s a whole different world between the Hooters Pro Cup Cars and the Super Late Models. The horsepower-to-weight ratio is a lot easier in the Super Late Models, and that makes them fun to drive. They are also a lot easier to work on and we really enjoy it.
“We were planning on trying to get up there one day this week to do some testing, but with the Peach State race coming at us pretty quick with our Hooters Pro Cup deal, we’re not sure if we can,” added Rogers. “I have a lot of laps there and we have tested my old Super Late Model up there before. I feel very confident about it.”
