"Wild" Bill Slater, a former track champion at Stafford Motor Speedway, Waterford Speedbowl and Thompson International Speedway in Connecticut and the former Norwood Arena in Massachusetts, passed away Sunday at the age of 83. Slater, a New England Auto Racers Hall of Fame inductee, won Modified races from Oxford Plains, Maine to Trenton, New Jersey. His biggest win came in the 1965 Race of Champions event at the one-mile Langhorne Speedway (PA). He was also instrumental in the re-birth of Stafford Motor Speedway, as he convinced the late Jack Arute, Sr. to purchase the facility in the late-60's and Slater quit his day job to become the track's racing director. A great storyteller, "Wild" Bill shared some of his racing memories with longtime motorsports journalist Pete Zanardi a few years back in this video.
