The TVMRS press release from the Star Speedway event:
Epping, NH: Kirk Alexander and his A-Team are at the top of the class. The 43 car returned to Star Speedway Saturday, July 23rd to finish what they started on June 18th. Earlier in the season Alexander had been disqualified from the Star Speedway True Value Modified Racing Series show for a questionable offense while charging his way to the front. This past Saturday night Alexander came back to Star and claimed his seventh win for the 2005 season.
The Leon Holmes Excavating 100 drew twenty-five cars that attempted to qualify for one of the twenty-two starting positions. Car counts have continued to remain high for the True Value Modified Racing Series during their second year of operations. With over fifty registered members the series has seen a high of 30 cars at a single event this year.
Before the feature got underway trouble would strike for the 06 of Les Hinckley. Hinckley’s car came to a stop under the flagstand and was pushed to the pit area. Hinckley’s crew attempted to find the problem before the drop of the green but was unsuccessful ending the night for the 06 team. Hinckley who started out the season with a charge on the points has now dropped back to fifth in the point’s standings.
Gary Casella in the Rosco Racing number 25 started on the point for the 100 lap feature with young gun Andy Seuss of New Hampton, NH in the 70 on Casella’s outside. Flagman John Spence Jr. brought fans to their feet as 21 ground pounders rolled out of turn four for the green. The field did not complete a lap before the caution would fly for the 11 of Les Mardaness on the backstretch breaking a front rack and the 20 of Rusty Ball broke a heim joint on left front and lost the steering taking a ride off turn three and into the grass. The damage received by Ball and Mardanes’s were unrelated incidents that ended their night early.
With zero laps on the board it was Casella and Seuss remaining on the front row for the restart. These two drivers went wheel to wheel for ten laps battling for the front spot. Seuss decided to save wear on his tires and gave way to Casella dropping back into the second spot. The second caution of the night came out on lap twenty three for veteran driver Kirby Monteith in the number 8 for spinning in the grass in turn two. Casella and Seuss still held onto the front row with the 9 of Dennis Albro and Jimmy Kuhn in the 72 making up the second row. Casella was on his game and continued to lead the way at the drop of the green. Green did not stay out long when the 9 of Albro appeared to have trouble dropping back many positions and then making contact with the 17 of Jack Bateman sending Bateman spinning out of turn 4. Kuhn in the 72 got by Seuss on the restart then focused his sites on Casella who was leading. There were only twenty three laps in the books but points leader Kirk Alexander had already made his way from the last starting spot to fifth.
On lap 42 it was Casella battling Alexander for the lead. Alexander battled Casella for the lead on the outside and took over the top spot. At the half way point Alexander collected the Black Mountain Painting half way bonus of $100.00. Behind Alexander the battle was between NASCAR Regional Champion Peter Daniels in the 76 and home track favorite Louie Mechalides in the 47 for the second spot. Mechalides who had won his first modified win earlier in the season as Star Speedway over powered Daniels to hold on to the second spot. Mechalides looking for a chance to challenge Alexander for the top spot came on lap eighty-one for the 9 of Dennis Albro spinning on the backstretch. The track was cleared and fans were on their feet as Mechalides and Alexander came out of turn four wheel to wheel. Mechalides got an edge on Alexander and became the leader as they charged into turn one. Mechalides lead fell short when the caution flew for the final time of the night. The 62 car of Roger Raymond had spun returning the field to the original starting positions of the previous restart. Mechalides luck did not ride with him on the restart as Alexander charged out front and kept the lead. Daniels riding in the third spot was challenged by Jimmy Kuhn in the 72. Kuhn overpowered Daniels along with Dwight Jarvis in the 28 of Ascutney, Vermont putting Daniels to the fifth spot. Two more cautions plagued the final laps of the race. Each restart being single file Alexander kept his car out front and captured his seventh win of the 2005 season. Mechalides placed second with Jimmy Kuhn finishing third. Dwight Jarvis and Peter Daniels rounded out the top five.
Once again Alexander collected the Sunoco Race Fuels Hard Charger Award for gaining the most positions from his starting spot of 22nd. Peter Daniels received the Sherwood Racing Wheels award for his fifth place finish. Alexander has now closed the gap severely on Peter Daniels for the points chase. Alexander lacks only one point behind Daniels.
The True Value Modified Racing Series returns to Alexander’s home stomping grounds, Monadnock Speedway on July 30, 2005 in Winchester, NH.
