JUST MY THOUGHTS: December 2009

I find it hard to believe, but this will be the last "JUST MY THOUGHTS" for the 2009 racing season. There are several things I would like to discuss, so let's get into it.

SCHEDULES -
Unless you have been hiding under a rock, you have heard that both the NASCAR Whelen and Whelen Southern Modified Tour schedules have been released. I have several thoughts related to this topic. First thing first. People can call the NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour races at Atlanta and Charlotte's 1/4 mile tracks "joke races", but I 100% disagree. Granted the tracks are more suitable for Legend type racecars, BUT these races will gain much needed exposure for the Whelen Southern Modified Tour and Modifieds in general. To me, these races are all about exposure. I also gaze into my crystal ball and see future Whelen and Whelen Southern Modified Tour combination events on the 1.5 mile tracks of Atlanta and Charlotte in the future. Hopefully some of the "taxicab" drivers will jump into "real" racecars at these events to gain even more exposure. My second schedule related thought focuses on the Whelen Modified Tour's Lime Rock Park event. Oh where are the "It will never happen" posters now? This event will gain major exposure for the Whelen Modified Tour. Running as a companion event to the NASCAR Camping World East Series, several road racing fans will get to see the Modifieds for the first time. The Fourth of July Weekend date should help many loyal Tour followers attend. If this event can just get the rumored television coverage, it should go a long way in promoting the Tour. Next, I wanted to talk about the Riverhead Raceway event. I hope that people will join Forum Member LIMODMANIAC in his quest to raise money for the drivers purse. It's loyal fans like him that will keep the Tour going for many years to come. Next, it is the Martinsville Speedway event. I am not sure if making this event a non-combination with the Whelen Southern Modified Tour is a good move or not. The fact that it is now a companion event for the NASCAR Camping World East Series should expose the Tour to more new fans. Hopefully a combination of the two divisions fans will equal a great crowd. Finally, it is AWESOME to see Monadnock back on the Tour schedule.

TELEVISION - Can everyone please ask Santa for the RUMORED 10 race deal. An announcement SOON would be nice. It  is MUCH easier to sell a definite package to a potential sponsor. If the 10 races are actually shown, I expect to see car counts rise. I also expect the Tour to gain a larger fan base, one that extends way beyond the normality of the Northeast and Carolinas.

THE MIXED BAG - I had some final thoughts and decided to put them all in one topic. First,  it is nice to see Chuck Hossfeld back with the Tour for 2010. I can only hope that Erick Rudolph will be back as well. Secondly, Will Keith Rocco have a ride? Third, will 2009 NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour Champion George Brunnhoelzl III attempt to run any Northern events? Fourth, will there be any Rookies for either Tour? And finally, which NASCAR Sprint Cup Series drivers will attempt to drive "real" racecars?

In closing, I just want to thank everyone who has taken the time to read "JUST MY THOUGHTS" during the  2009 racing season. It will be a Monthly post again in 2010. I wish everyone a Merry Christmas and Joyous New Year. Look for the first "JUST MY THOUGHTS" OF 2010 around Januray 1st.

Thanx again,

-WMT-

As far as rookies go, there will be at least one, Justin Bonsignore will be running the Tour next year.

Thanx for that information Ben. Will he still meet the Rookie qualifications? I know he has attempted the Tour in the past at times.

I just wanted to add something about the Atlanta and Charlotte events. With any luck, young Legends Racers will be on hand to witness the races. For those who are looking to move up the ladder, the events could lure them towards Modifieds. This in turn, could help the NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour grow.
