Winchester, NH: The True Value Modified Racing Series returned to Monadnock Speedway Saturday, June 11, 2005 for the Century 21 Thackston & Co 100. With the temperatures in the high 80's fans packed the seats to watch these open wheel ground pounders take on the high banked 1/4 mile track. Twenty-nine teams made the trip to Monadnock Speedway to take their chances to make the final field of twenty-two cars to start later in the night.
The modifieds entered into their qualifying heats with only twenty-two spots to fill. Drivers were on the edge as they would make a charge to be in the main event. Those not qualifying move on to the consi for a last chance to make the show. Contact in the consi would send teams packing after not qualifying as the 47 of Louie Michalides, 70 of Andy Suess and Dave Nichols in the 22. Ed Dachenhausen would make the field with a points provisional staring him at the back of the field.
Monadnock favorite Rob Goodenough in the 01 would start on the point of the 100 lap feature event. On the outside of the front row would be veteran driver Kirby "Mountain Man" Monteith in the 8 from Unity, NH. Goodenough would take the green and jump out in front of Monteith who was followed by Jack Bateman in the JRB Transportation #17 and Roger Raymond in the 62 of Bernardston, MA. Raymond would have bad luck on lap eight bringing out the first caution having his left front suspension breaking. The front row would remain Goodenough and Monteith for the restart. Monteith and Goodenough would battle side by side until lap eleven when Monteith would take the lead. The 11 of Les Mardanes would bring out caution number two when he would have car failure coming into turn one. The restart would be short lived as the 29 of Paul Surprenant of Springfield, MA would make contact with Jim Boniface in the Sure Winner Foods number 71 sending Boniface into the grass of the backstretch.
Monteith would continue to hold off Goodenough on the restart with Jack Bateman in the 17 in the fourth spot taking over third from Bruce Batchelder in the 77 of Springfield, VT. Batchelder would bring out the next caution on lap twenty-five with what would appear to be a broken suspension. Kirby Monteith would continue to dominate the front of the field and hold the lead. At the half way mark Monteith still with the lead would cash in on the Black Mountain and Painting half way bonus.
On lap sixty one Kirk Alexander coming from the back of the pack would take the lead away from Monteith. Alexander wheeled his way from the twenty second starting position to the front of the pack. Alexander has become a dominator in the True Value Modified Racing Series making this his fourth win of the young season. As well Alexander has become the hard charger king coming from the back of the pack four weeks in a row to earn the Sunoco Hard Charger Award. Monteith would eventually slip back to the fifth position to be awarded the Sheerwood Wheel gift certificate for the night. Points leader Les Hinckley would place second followed by Jimmy Kuhn Jr. in the 72 of Bridgewater, MA finishing third. Peter Daniels in the RSD number 76 would place fourth. Daniels who earlier in the night had been involved in a qualifier wreck made the show after taking the last qualifying spot in the consi. Alexander has now closed the gap for the points chase with being only 18 points behind Les Hinckley.
Next up the True Value Modified Racing Series will make their first appearance of 2005 at Star Speedway in Epping, NH. The modifieds will go head to head for 100 laps of ground pounding action.
