Thunder Road Gearing up for 45th Chittenden Bank Milk Bowl
For Immediate Release TR-090908-1
BARRE, VT Stock car drivers from around New England and eastern Canada are preparing for the 45th Annual Chittenden Bank Milk Bowl event at Barre, VTs Thunder Road on the weekend of Sept. 27/28. The Milk Bowl is a three-segment, cumulatively scored event that awards $10,000 to the winner plus bonuses. And in a tradition that dates back to the first running of the race in 1962, the winner gets to kiss a real Vermont beauty, but with a twist the lovely gal is a 1,000-lb Ayrshire dairy cow. Montréal driver Patrick Laperle has won two of the last three Chittenden Bank Milk Bowls. Her nose is usually a little wet, but I dont mind kissing her if it means Ive won the Milk Bowl, said Laperle. The 2008 Milk Bowl queen will be announced in the coming days. Harvest Hills Farms Dickens was Laperles leading lady last year. Aside from the pageantry, the race is a prestigious, historic event, and is the 12th and final race on the American-Canadian Tour (ACT) Late Model Championship schedule. In 2006, National Speed Sport News named the Chittenden Bank Milk Bowl the Outstanding Annual Short Track Event in the United States. Legendary short track heroes including Robbie Crouch of Tampa, FL, the late Butch Lindley of Greenville, SC, Dave Dion of Hudson, NH, and Jean-Paul Cabana of Sherrington, QC have each triumphed in the event. More recently, Brent Dragon of Milton, VT joined his father, Beaver, and uncle, Bobby, as a Milk Bowl winner, taking the honors in 2006. Local Vermont heroes Cris Michaud, Eric Williams, Dave Pembroke, and Phil Scott have also kissed the cow. The Milk Bowl is a 150-lap race broken into three 50-lap segments. The winner of each segment is given one point, the second-place finisher two points, etc., and the driver with the lowest overall score after three rounds is declared the Milk Bowl champion. Booth Bros./H.P. Hood time trials and Triple 50 qualifying races, along with a last-chance B Feature, determine the first-segment starting order. Drivers expected to challenge Laperle at the 45th Annual Chittenden Bank Milk Bowl include ACT Late Model Tour point leader Scott Payea and seven-time ACT champion Jean-Paul Cyr of Milton, VT, 2003 Milk Bowl winner and 2008 Thunder Road Track Champion Williams of Hyde Park, VT, New Hampshire stars Joey Pole Polewarczyk and Randy Potter, Maines Glen Luce, and as many as 50 more. Booth Bros./H.P. Hood Qualifying Day begins at 1:30pm on Saturday, Sept. 27 with Time Trials. The driver with the fastest one-lap time will earn the pole position for the Chittenden Bank Milk Bowl and $1,000. The last- chance B Feature begins at 1:30pm on Sunday, Sept. 28, followed by opening ceremonies for the 45th Annual Chittenden Bank Milk Bowl. General admission is $25 for adults and just $5 for children (6-12). Admission for Saturday only is $10 for adults and free for children. BARRE, VT American-Canadian Tour Late Model stock car racing champion Brian Hoar will return to the drivers seat at Thunder Roads 45th Annual Chittenden Bank Milk Bowl on Sat./Sun., Sept. 27/28. Hoar, 36, has been idle since the end of the 2007 season, a year in which the Williston, VT racer finished sixth in his first full season back on the ACT Late Model Tour following his fifth series championship in 2000. He previously raced in the series now known as NASCAR Camping World East. Im headed to a track in New Hampshire to test the car and knock the rust off the driver, said Hoar. Well be in great shape on Milk Bowl weekend. Its been a long time since Ive kissed a cow, and Id love to do it again, he said, referencing to the events long-standing tradition of the winning driver smooching a Vermont dairy cow in victory lane. Hoar won the Chittenden Bank Milk Bowl in 1998 and 1999, one of only two drivers in history to win in successive years. Burnett Scrap Metals and Goss Dodge will underwrite Hoars return. Hood Time Trials and Triple 50 qualifying races determine the starting order of Segment 1 on Saturday, Sept. 27. Hoar won the Booth Bros./H.P. Hood Pole Award in Milk Bowl qualifying each year from 1997 to 2000, years in which he also won the ACT Late Model Tour championship. His total low score of four points to win the 1998 edition of the Chittenden Bank Milk Bowl was the second-lowest in history. Hoar is also a former track champion at Thunder Road, Airborne Speedway in Plattsburgh, NY, and the 1-mile New Hampshire Motor Speedway in Loudon, NH. Hoar will challenge ACT Late Model Tour championship leaders Scott Payea of Milton, VT and Patrick Laperle of Montréal for the victory. Thunder Road Championships to be Decided at Milk Bowl
For Immediate Release TR-092508-1
BARRE, VT Three stock car racing divisional championships will be decided at Barre, VTs Thunder Road with the 45th Annual Chittenden Bank Milk Bowl on Sat./Sun., Sept. 27/28. Eric Williams of Hyde Park, VT was crowned the Late Model divisions 2008 King of the Road Track Champion in August, leaving the NAPA Tiger Sportsman, Allen Lumber Street Stock, and Power Shift Online Junkyard Warrior battles to go down the seasons final event. Craig Bushey, 28, of Cambridge, leads the Sportsman class by a slim 32 points (933-901) over veteran driver Joey Laquerre of East Montpelier entering the Milk Bowl finale. Busheys Vermont Life Safety/Robinson Fuels Chervolet has been consistent, scoring a dozen top-10 finishes in 15 starts, including a Ferguson Waterworks Night victory in June. In a division where only two drivers have qualified for all 16 feature races to this point, Bushey says there are three parts to surviving the weekly battles and hopefully winning the season-long war. It starts with the luck of the draw and where you start in your qualifying heat, Bushey said. Then youve got to stay out of wrecks and keep your nose clean, and then youve got to know where your competition is and stay within reach of them. Weve had a good year, hopefully we can it finish it that way. Bushey also reported that he will be attempting double-duty, running a new Late Model car with the American-Canadian Tour in the 45th Annual Chittenden Bank Milk Bowl. Tom Therrien of Hinesburg ranks third in Sportsman standings at 876 points, with Craftsburys Joel Hodgdon and Shawn Sicard of Barre tied in fourth at 851 each. Therriens younger brother, Bobby, leads Mike Ziter of Williamstown in the rookie standings, 155-145. Sixteen year-old Cody Blake of Barre is third at 140 points. Veteran Allen Lumber Street Stock driver Lloyd Blakely of Graniteville has plenty of pressure on him entering his divisions final event. Five drivers are within 50 points of Blakely for the championship, including young drivers Jason Corliss of Plainfield and Greg Adams, Jr. of Hardwick, tied only nine points behind in second place (979-970). Blakely posted 12 top-10 finishes in the first 14 events of the Street Stock campaign, although Corliss has chipped away at the lead each week since the end of July. Adams has made a meteoric rise from 31st place in May to championship contention, with a string of 11-straight top-10 finishes. The Power Shift Online Junkyard Warrior season will be completed on Saturday, Sept. 27 on Booth Bros./H.P. Hood Qualifying Day for the American-Canadian Tour, and the championship chase is down to just two drivers. Granitevilles Travis Hull, in his first full season of racing, leads Wolcott driver Jamie Davis by 26 points entering the event, 1347-1321. Each driver has earned two feature wins and a staggering 18 top-10 finishes. Two-day general admission for the 45th Annual Chittenden Bank Milk Bowl, including Booth Bros./H.P. Hood Qualifying Day, is just $25 for adults and $5 for children (6-12). Admission for Saturday only is just $10 for adults and free for kids.
