Chittenden to Present 44th Annual Vermont Milk Bowl at Thunder Road
For Immediate Release TR-090407-1
The 44th Annual Vermont Milk Bowl at Barre, VTs Thunder Road has new underwriting for its 2007 season- ending stock car event. Chittenden, a major banking institution in Vermont for over 100 years, will support the states largest annual sports event that in 2006 was voted by American promoters as the top short track (under ½- mile) race in the nation. Supporting Vermont traditions is part of our world at Chittenden, and sponsoring the Milk Bowl seemed like a natural choice. We look forward to celebrating the big event with our fellow Vermonters on race day, said Chittenden President and CEO John W. Kelley. Defending Chittenden Milk Bowl Champion Brent Dragon of Milton, VT noted, Adding Chittenden to the race can only be a positive thing for all involved in racing. The Chittenden Milk Bowls format, with three 50-lap segments, complete field inversions for the second and third legs, and a scoring system based on best finishes in each round, is unique. A perfect score of three points (three segment wins), has been achieved just three times since 1962. Over 50 American-Canadian Tour (ACT) Late Model race teams are expected to attempt qualifying, with only 28 comprising the starting grid. Entries have already been received from throughout the Northeastern United States and eastern Canada for the $60,000+ race. Booth Bros./H.P. Hood time trials, Triple 50 qualifying races, and additional qualifying for Thunder Road support divisions begins at 1:30 pm on Saturday, Sept. 29. A last-chance B Feature will kick off the action on Sunday, Sept. 30 at 1:00pm, followed by pre- Chittenden Milk Bowl ceremonies and race Segment I. Championship deciding events for the NAPA Tiger Sportsman and Allen Lumber Street Stock divisions are also featured in the Thunder Road 2007 finale. Chittenden Milk Bowl to Decide Thunder Road Divisional Champions
For Immediate Release TR-090507-1
BARRE, VT The 44th Annual Chittenden Milk Bowl at Barres Thunder Road will be pivotal in deciding the weekly division champions at The Nations Site of Excitement on Sat./Sun., September 29/30. With Late Model King of the Road Dave Pembroke of Montpelier wrapping up his first career title on Fisher/Federated Auto Parts Night last month, the stage is now set for the NAPA Tiger Sportsman, Allen Lumber Street Stock, and Power Shift Online Junkyard Warrior divisions. Hometown driver Nick Sweet, 23, is on the brink of taking his first career Sportsman crown, leading 27 year-old Cambridge racer Craig Bushey by a nearly insurmountable 81 points entering the Chittenden Milk Bowl finale. Sweet opened the season with a convincing victory in May, and backed it up with a second score on Pepsi Fireworks Night in July. Despite failing to qualify for one event (only one driver Joe Steffen has made the starting field in all 16 races this year), Sweets 13 top-ten finishes in 15 starts have positioned him to place his name in the Thunder Road history books. We try not to think about the points until its all over, but it would be nice to have my name on that list of Tiger champions, said Sweet. Joey Laquerre won the title a long time ago, and he has taught me a lot about being a racer. Jimmy Young, Cooper MacRitchie, John Donahue, all the drivers that I grew up admiring it would be an honor to see my name with theirs. Sweet leads Bushey, 1,005 points to 924. Laquerre sits third at 891 points, just ahead of Matt White at 886 and rookie Joel Hodgdon at 876. Hinesburg rookie Bobby Therrien will try to cap off his record-breaking season by becoming the first freshman driver to win the Allen Lumber Street Stock championship. The 20 year-old owns five feature wins, the most by any rookie ever in the division, and leads Barres Lloyd Blakely, 41, by just 12 points. Blakely entered the last event, the Bond Auto Labor Day Classic, as the point leader, but was involved in a mid-race crash. Therrien narrowly escaped damage, finishing fourth and taking a slim point lead, 1,043 to 1,031. David Allen (1,008 points), rookie Mike Ziter (998), and Mike Martin (988) round out the top five. While it may not show in the win column, the Power Shift Online Junkyard Warrior division has been dominated by a trio of drivers 27 year-old Bunker Hodgdon, Jamie Davis, 26, and David Whitcomb, 43. Hodgdon, of Hardwick, has posted only two victories in 16 starts, but has finished in the top-five a staggering 10 times. Wolcott racer Davis, with a streak of 14 straight finishes in the top ten, is still searching for his first win. Elmore driver Whitcomb has just a single victory, but has 15 top ten results on the year. At 1,212 points, Hodgdon leads Davis (1,163) and Whitcomb (1,144) entering the finale. In addition to the championship battles, Thunder Road will host over 50 American-Canadian Tour Late Model teams in the 44th Annual Chittenden Milk Bowl on Sat./Sun., Sept. 29/30. Entries have been received from throughout the northeastern United States and Canada, and continue to roll in. Brent Dragon of Milton, VT will attempt to become just the third driver in history to earn consecutive Milk Bowl victories in the $10,000-to-win ACTion Super Series event. Chittenden Milk Bowl Champion Brent Dragon Will Attempt to Defend Title
For Immediate Release TR-091907-1
BARRE, VT Vermont stock car racer Brent Dragon will attempt to become only the third driver in 44 years to successfully defend his Chittenden Milk Bowl Championship at Barres Thunder Road International Speedbowl on Sat./Sun., September 29/30. The American-Canadian Tour (ACT) veteran is one of three Dragon family members to have won the nationally respected event. He has joined his father Harmon Beaver Dragon (winner in 1978) and uncle Bob Dragon (1972). I was reading the names of the past champions, and I noticed that theres only been a back-to-back Milk Bowl winner twice in history, said the younger Dragon. It would really be something to be the next one to pull it off. Should he win consecutive Chittenden Milk Bowl titles, the Milton, VT native would be the first driver since Williston, VTs Brian Hoar in 1998-99 to do so. Dave Whitlock of Wyoming, Ontario was the first in 1994- 95. Dragon is particularly looking forward to the traditional pre-race ceremonies on Milk Bowl Sunday at Thunder Road. Its going to be a real honor to stand in front of all those Thunder Road fans with my father and Bobby, he said. I look up to every one of the past winners, but carrying our familys tradition is very important to me. The Chittenden Milk Bowl was voted by American race promoters and National Speed Sport News as the nations Outstanding Annual Short Track Event in 2006, the highest honor for a single race in the United States. The Milk Bowls unique race format, with three 50-lap segments and a special cumulative point system to determine the overall winner, plus its traditional victory lane complete with a genuine Vermont beauty as the trophy queen (this year an Ayrshire cow), have given it a distinct place in the national short track racing spotlight. Dragon also collected nearly $12,000 in purse money and bonuses last year. A talented and diverse mix of drivers will challenge Dragon for his Chittenden Milk Bowl title, including Dragons cross-town Milton rivals Jean-Paul Cyr and Scott Payea, currently 1-2 in the ACT championship standings. Cyr was the 1996 Chittenden Milk Bowl Champion, while Payea has a pair of fourth-place finishes in the event to his credit. Also expected to take a run at Dragon are Patrick Laperle of Montreal, the 2005 winner; four-time winner Robbie Crouch of Tampa, FL; 2007 King of the Road Dave Pembroke of Montpelier, VT; Maine champions Mike and Ben Rowe; and New Hampshire stars Randy Potter, Rocket Roger Brown, and young Joey Pole Polewarczyk, the 2006 Booth Bros./H.P. Hood Milk Bowl Pole Award winner. Thunder Roads weekly NAPA Tiger Sportsman, Allen Lumber Street Stock, and Power Shift Online Warrior divisions will crown their 2007 Champions on Chittenden Milk Bowl weekend as well. General admission for Booth Bros./H.P. Hood Qualifying Day on Saturday, including the Warrior season finale, is $10 for adults and free for children under 12. Two-day general admission is only $25 for adults and just $5 for children. Racing and pre- race ceremonies begin at 1:30pm on Sat., Sept. 29, and at 1:00pm on Sun., Sept. 30. American-Canadian Tour (ACT) Late Model competitors from across the northeastern United States and Canada will attempt to break the Thunder Road single-lap time trial record of 12.935 seconds set last year by teenage sensation Joey Pole Polewarczyk, Jr. of Hudson, NH. Id love to beat my own record, said the recent Alvirne (NH) High School graduate. We know what it takes to get the pole, but it all comes down to the weather in Vermont. PASS, NASCAR Champions Enter ACT Chittenden Milk Bowl
For Immediate Release ACT-092507-1
BARRE, VT Stock car racing champions from the top short track series in America have entered this weekends 44th Annual Chittenden Milk Bowl, a $10,000-to-win ACTion Super Series event for the American-Canadian Tour (ACT), at Thunder Road in Barre, VT, Sat./Sun, Sept. 29/30. Leading the way are defending Pro All Stars Series (PASS) South Champion Mike Rowe of Turner, ME and two-time NASCAR Busch East Series king Brad Leighton of Center Harbor, NH. Each driver is also a former ACT Champion. It would be nice to finally win the Milk Bowl, said Rowe, who earned his fifth victory of the season at Beech Ridge (ME) Motor Speedway last weekend. Its as tough a race as youll find anywhere. Ive won a couple of segments, but I was never able to contend for the win like I wanted to. The Chittenden Milk Bowl is a unique, three-segment event with cumulative scoring and full field inversions between segments. The driver with the lowest three-round point total is declared the winner, earning the right to kiss a real Vermont beauty. Last years trophy girl was a 1,600-lb Ayrshire dairy cow. The closest Rowe has come to smooching the lovely lady was a fifth-place overall effort during his ACT Championship run in 1994. His mount for the weekend is the #24 Lux Enterprises Chevrolet of Arundel, ME car owner Mike Lux. Leighton sat on the sidelines after not qualifying for the recent Beech Ridge event. He said the experience gave him a reality check and an added dose of motivation. That was the first time Ive failed to qualify in 20 years, he said, so now I really want to win and kiss that cow. The Milk Bowl is a tough race to win, and its just as tough to qualify for, but my team is up to the challenge. Leighton finished a sixth in the Bond Auto Labor Day Classic 200 at Thunder Road earlier this month. His best Chittenden Milk Bowl result was fourth place in 1992. The 1995 ACT Champion will drive a #55 Irving Oil/Coca-Cola Chevrolet prepared by veteran crew chief Pete Duto of Middlesex, VT this weekend. Booth Bros./H.P. Hood Qualifying Day begins at 1:00pm on Saturday, Sept. 29, and includes ACT Late Model Tour time trials and Triple 50 qualifying races, as well as qualifying events for Thunder Roads NAPA Tiger Sportsman and Allen Lumber Street Stock divisions and the season finale for the Power Shift Warriors. The last- chance ACT B Feature qualifier begins at 1:00pm on Sunday, Sept. 30, followed by pre-race ceremonies and Segment I of the Chittenden Milk Bowl. Final championship events for the Sportsmen and Street Stocks are also on the card. American race promoters and National Speed Sport News voted the ACTion Super Series Chittenden Milk Bowl, with a total 2007 purse over $60,000, as the Outstanding Annual Short Track Event for 2006, the highest honor for a single race. General admission for adults is $10 on Saturday or $25 for both weekend days. Children under 12 will be admitted for free on Saturday and for only $5 on Sunday.
