Gravel Doubles Up in Front of Monster Crowd at Thunder Road, NASCARs Wallace 12th
For Immediate Release TR-062807-1
BARRE, VT Marcel Gravel of Wolcott made stock car racing history at Barres Thunder Road on Sanel Parts Plus Night on Thursday. In front of the largest crowd of the season, Gravel became the first driver since the inception of the ACT Late Model division in 1992 to take the first two wins of his career in consecutive events. The defending Thunder Road Rookie of the Year started fifth on the 26-car field, which included NASCAR Nextel Cup Series driver Kenny Wallace of St. Louis, MO, and passed leader Jerry Lesage of Winooski on a lap 31 restart.
The car was great tonight, said Gravel in victory lane. I wanted to adjust the setup, but my crew chief said not to. He was right, and the car was really strong.
Veteran racer Lesage held on during the remainder of the 50-lap Sanel Parts Plus Trophy Dash to finish second for his best result of the year, while former track champion Dave Whitcomb of Essex Jct. was awarded third place in the technical inspection line. Apparent third-place finisher Gary Caron was disqualified for an illegal carburetor spacer. Shelburnes Dennis Demers was moved up to fourth place ahead of Hyde Park driver Eric Williams.
Joey Becker, Rich Lowrey, Trampas Demers, Dave Pembroke, and Kip Stockwell completed the unofficial Top 10 finishers in order. Wallace fought an ill-handling car to finish in 12th place.
Kris Grout, Brian Delphia, and Brendan Moodie turned in a sensational performance in the 35-lap Tiger Sportsman feature event that saw Moodie escape from a lap 33 incident with Joey Laquerre to take the victory, his first of the season. The North Wolcott drivers new baby boy, Brendan III, was in attendance for the win. Grout, of Waterbury finished second, while Craig Bushey of Cambridge stole third spot from Delphia. Tom Therrien finished fifth, unofficially. Rookie Joel Hodgdon, Matt Potter, David Finck, Chris Gendreau, and Mark Barnier rounded out the Top 10 in order.
David Greenslit carried the checkered flag for the first time in his Allen Lumber Street Stock career. The Waitsfield driver moved his Winters Performance Ford Mustang into the lead past Patrick Underwood just before the halfway mark, and cruised to an easy victory over Tommy Smith of Williamstown. David Allen of North Troy finished third, while Underwood faded to fourth place. Joe Fecteau was fifth, unofficially. Greenslits win in a rear-wheel drive Mustang ended a seven race victory streak by front-wheel drive cars that extended to last August.
Jeff Martin, Jr. of Moretown patched his Power Shift Junkyard Warrior back together after a flip two weeks ago to take the feature win in his division. Frank Sanborn of Waterbury Center finished second ahead of Hardwicks Bunker Hodgdon, who flipped his car last week as well.
Thunder Roads 48th season of exciting stock car racing continues on Tuesday, July 3 with the Pepsi Independence Day Fireworks Spectacular. All four racing divisions will be in action, starting at 6:30pm. For more information, call (802) 244-6963 or visit www.thunderroadspeedbowl.com
