SYLVAIN LACOMBE VICTORIOUS AT AUTODROME MONTMAGNY FOR Immediate Release SAC-061607-1 MONTMAGNY, QC Stock car racer Sylvain Lacombe of Terrebonne, Quebec played the waiting game Saturday at the Autodrome Montmagny Speedway and it paid off for the veteran Late Model competitor with his first win of the season in four Série ACT Castrol starts. Lacombe, the 2005 champion, sat back while other competitors battled for the lead then took advantage of their mistakes. While running third he inherited the top spot on the 57^th lap of the Montmagny 100 when Quebec racers, leader Donald Theetge of Boischatel, and runner-up St-Denis Patrick Laperle spun out while battling for position. My car was handling well, commented Lacombe in Victory Lane. We didnt do a thing to it all day. I think I would have had something for Donald and Patrick, but they made it easier for me, he finished with a grin. While Lacombe was the winner, the real story at Montmagny was runner-up Jean-Francois Déry of Val-Belair. Last years championship runner-up pitted on lap 17 with a brake problem when the events first caution flew. While his team worked feverishly to remedy the problem, the Montmagny 100 went back to green racing action. A spin by leader Daniel Bergeron brought out the yellow flag for a second time before another lap had been completed. Déry was able to join the back of the field on the second restart without losing a lap with a pair of Vice-Grip pliers clamped on his brake line to remedy the problem. He was able to work his way to the front of the field with the assistance of several caution periods. Série ACT Castrol Rookie of the Year contender Spencer MacPherson from Carleton Place, ON finished third following up a top ten finish at the Toromont CAT 100 the previous week. Also turning in a career best effort was fourth place runner Jacques Poulin from East Broughton, Qc. Completing the top five was Eric St-Gelais of St Nicolas, Qc, another freshman racer with a career best effort. Pole sitter Bergeron from St-Benoit de Mirabel, Qc recovered from his early race spin to finish sixth. Seventh went to Steven Boissonneault of Lyster, Theetge and Laperle rebounded after their lap 57 incident to finish eighth and ninth respectively. Rounding out the top 10 was veteran Yvon Bedard of St-Nicolas, another early race leader. Nine cautions and two red flags slowed the pace at the high banked 3/8ths mile oval to one hour and 32 minutes, a stark contrast to the 38 minute race one week ago at Ottawas Capital City Speedway, a track of similar size and shape. None of the drivers were injured in any of the incidents and the red flags were to allow safety crews to clean up after the incidents. The most spectacular caution happened on the 55^th circuit for Normand Lavigueur of Laval, Qc. While running seventh on the front stretch, his Chevrolet suddenly veered into the front stretch wall hitting it two times with such force that a pair of concrete Jersey barriers weighing 2½ tons each were knocked over. The veteran competitor walked away from the scene. Déry, who led the season-long Série ACT Castrol standings entering Saturdays event extended his advantage to an unofficial 37 points over Karl Allard from St-Elicien, Qc (329-296). Lacombes victory vaults him from eighth into third in the point tally with 291. Before the start of the Montmagny 100, the impressive crowd was treated to a two round Castrol Pit Stop contest by six of the 23 Late Model teams. Donald Theetges team set the pace in the first round with a time of 17.48 seconds. In the second go, Jean-François Dérys crew had the fastest stop but at 17.49 seconds, they were a mere one-hundredths of a second behind Theetge who won the competition. Other participants included the crews of Yvon Bedard, Simon Roussin, Dany Ouellet and Patrick Laperle. .
