SWEET, MELENDY, BICKFORD SCORE MERCHANTS BANK WINS AT THUNDER ROAD

For Immediate Release                            TR07-050607

BARRE, VT Hometown driver Nick Sweet led a parade of young drivers into victory lane at Barres
Thunder Road International Speedbowl on Merchants Bank opening day Sunday.  Sweet drove his Fortiers
Community Care Home Chevrolet around Justin Hart on lap 18 to take the lead in the 40-lap NAPA Tiger
Sportsman feature event, and cruised to his fourth career Thunder Road win.  Sweet, who started 10th in the
26-car field, finished nearly a half-lap ahead of eventual runner-up Joey Laquerre.
Laquerre, a Thunder Road competitor in five decades, won a spirited last-lap duel with Pete
Ainsworth for second position.  Multi-time Thunder Road champion Chuck Beede drove from deep in the field
to finish in fourth place, ahead of Kevin Campbell.  Hart, Kevin Boutin, Jeff French, Brendan Moodie, and
Matt White rounded out the top ten in order.
Teenager Bruce Melendy of Danville got his season off on the right foot, besting 38 other Allen
Lumber Street Stock competitors in their 30-lap Merchants Bank season opener.  Melendy passed Street Stock
veteran Tommy Thunder Smith for the lead, then held off Mike Martin and Lloyd Blakely for his first
career win.  Smith held on for fourth place, just ahead of David Allen.
Dale Bickford of Lyndonville scored his first Power Shift Online Junkyard Warrior win, holding off
top dogs Bunker Hodgdon, Jamie Davis, Jeff Abbey, and David Whitcomb.
Thunder Roads 48th season of exciting stock car racing continues with the Casella Waste Management
Mothers Day Extravaganza on Sunday, May 13 at 1:00pm.  A 100-lap event for the NAPA Tiger Sportsman
