SWEET, MELENDY, BICKFORD SCORE MERCHANTS BANK WINS AT THUNDER ROAD

BARRE, VT Hometown driver Nick Sweet led a parade of young drivers into victory lane at Barres Thunder Road International Speedbowl on Merchants Bank opening day Sunday. Sweet drove his Fortiers Community Care Home Chevrolet around Justin Hart on lap 18 to take the lead in the 40-lap NAPA Tiger Sportsman feature event, and cruised to his fourth career Thunder Road win. Sweet, who started 10th in the 26-car field, finished nearly a half-lap ahead of eventual runner-up Joey Laquerre. Laquerre, a Thunder Road competitor in five decades, won a spirited last-lap duel with Pete Ainsworth for second position. Multi-time Thunder Road champion Chuck Beede drove from deep in the field to finish in fourth place, ahead of Kevin Campbell. Hart, Kevin Boutin, Jeff French, Brendan Moodie, and Matt White rounded out the top ten in order. Teenager Bruce Melendy of Danville got his season off on the right foot, besting 38 other Allen Lumber Street Stock competitors in their 30-lap Merchants Bank season opener. Melendy passed Street Stock veteran Tommy Thunder Smith for the lead, then held off Mike Martin and Lloyd Blakely for his first career win. Smith held on for fourth place, just ahead of David Allen. Dale Bickford of Lyndonville scored his first Power Shift Online Junkyard Warrior win, holding off top dogs Bunker Hodgdon, Jamie Davis, Jeff Abbey, and David Whitcomb. Thunder Roads 48th season of exciting stock car racing continues with the Casella Waste Management Mothers Day Extravaganza on Sunday, May 13 at 1:00pm. A 100-lap event for the NAPA Tiger Sportsman division will highlight the race card, and ten lucky mothers will be named officials for a day at Thunder Road. Children of all ages are encouraged to nominate their moms for honorary official positions for a special event on Mothers Day at Thunder Road.
