April 23, Riverhead, NY--- Its finally time to go racing again at Barbara and Jim Cromartys Riverhead Raceway and the 2007 campaign will get underway in spectacular fashion with a doubleheader weekend May 5th & 6th. The NASCAR Whelen All-American Series will make its Long Island debut Saturday evening, while the Enduro competitors will take to the track Sunday afternoon.
With Whelen Engineering out of Connecticut the new title sponsor for the NASCAR short track series across America and the recently announced $2,000 to win for a 35-lap NASCAR Modified victory at Riverhead this season it should be an interesting spring and summer at the historic oval.
It is expected that five of the six 2006 NASCAR track champions will be back for a title defense in 2007 headed-up by NASCAR Modified kingpin Chuck Steuer of Bohemia. Greg Kleila of Lindenhurst won the 2006 Late Model crown while Tom Kraft of Medford was tops in the Figure Eights, both are hoping to make it two in a row in 07. Steve Ratti of Manorville the 2006 Charger champion and Tommy Walkowiak of Ridge the Blunderbust champion of 06 are also readying to defend their crowns. Only Bobby Gardner of Westbury the 2006 Super Pro Truck champion will not return to the class this year, as he will compete in the NASCAR Modified division as a freshman driver.
The May 5th lid lifter will find all six divisions in action with qualifying set for 4:00 pm and feature event racing will take the first green flag of the new year at 5:30 pm.
After the stock car set has their opening night, the stars of the ever-tough Riverhead Raceway Enduros will kick-off their 2007 season Sunday afternoon at 12:30 pm. New to Enduro racing in all divisions in 2007 is the fact that they will now race for points all spring and summer long to determine the first ever Enduro champions at the end of the season in September.
A full slate of Enduro racing is set for May 6th featuring the Grand Enduros, 8-Cylinder, 6-Cylinder, 4-Cylinder and 4/6-Cylinder Trucks who will join in on the opening day fun and be joined by Spectator Drags and a Car Rollover Contest.
So after a lengthy off season and delayed start to spring its finally time to go racing on Long Island Saturday May 5th and Sunday May 6th at Riverhead Raceway! For additional information please call 631-842-RACE Monday through Friday or log on www.riverheadraceway.com.
