Now with all that out of the way.....Let's make some laps!
With the Town Fair Tire Finale looming, I thought I'd introduce a yet-to-be-unveiled part of The Vault which has to do with our upcoming extra-distance races. The Finale, along with the Modified Nationals and Pepsi 300, is part of what I've dubbed the Speedbowl's Triple Crown. And wouldn't ya know, there's some possible accomplishments I thought ya might wanna keep an eye on:
NOTE: Although the Mod Nats began in 1997 and there's always been some incarnation of a Finale, the Triple Crown Era starts in 1998 when those two & the mid-season Pepsi 300 became the only 3 extra distant events for our current NWRS divisions
TRIPLE CROWN WINNERS - SAME DIVISION / ONE SEASON Only 2 drivers have ever won all 3 events in the same division during the same year: ALLEN COATES - Late Model 1998 JAY STUART - Late Model 1999
DWAYNE DORR - Sportsman, who earlier this year won both the SM 30 lapper during the Mod Nats and the SM 50 portion of the Pepsi 300, has a chance to become the 3rd driver ever to accomplish this feat - and the first in his division.
TRIPLE CROWN WINNERS - SAME DIVISION / CAREER Only 7 drivers have won at least 1 of all 3 events in the same division during their career: COATES - Late Model STUART - Late Model ED GERTSCH JR - Sportsman JEFF MILLER - Mini Stocks PHIL EVANS - Mini Stocks RICHARD BROOKS - Mini Stocks
The 7th is COREY HUTCHINGS whose done it both in the Sportsman AND the Late Models
No SK driver has ever won all 3 events in their SK 'bowl career; however TOMMY FOX, who won last year's Bud Nats and this year's Pepsi 300, is the only current weekly competitor with a chance to become the first.
Should TED CHRISTOPHER or BERT MARVIN make a 'guest appearance' for the SK race, they too would be able to do so.
Some SK heavy hitters you maybe be wondering about: Dennis Gada - never won the Pepsi 300 Ron Yuhas Jr - never won the Bud Nats (last year's first race was a regular 35-lap SK event - rain) Eric Berndt - never won the Pepsi 300 Jeff Pearl, Ed Reed Jr & Rob Janovic Jr - (amazingly) none of these crafty vets have yet to capture any triple crown event (since '98)
TRIPLE CROWN RACES - OVERALL WINS / ONE DIVISION SK MODIFIEDS 5 - Ron Yuhas Jr 4 - Ted Christopher 3 - Dennis Gada 3 - Eric Berndt 2 - Bert Marvin 2 - Tommy Fox LATE MODELS 6 - Corey Hutchings 5 - Allen Coates 4 - Jay Stuart 3 - Mark St. Hiliare (never won Pepsi 300) 2 - Phil Rondeau (both Pepsi 300 wins) 2 - Chris "Moose" Douton (never won LM Bud Nats 50) SPORTSMAN 3 - Corey Hutchings 3 - Ed Gertsch Jr 3 - Chris "Moose Douton (never won SM Pepsi 300 50-lapper) 2 - Joe Mancini Jr (never won Finale) 2 - Shawn Monahan (both Pepsi 300 wins) 2 - Keith Rocco (won first 2 in '04 - Roger Perry won Finale) MINI STOCKS 4 - Jeff Miller 3 - Phil Evans 3 - Richard Brooks 2 - Billy Guyette (won first 2 in '98 - Miller won Finale) 2 - Ken Cassidy Jr (won Bud Nats & Finale in '05 - Danny Field won Pepsi 300 50-lapper)
TRIPLE CROWN RACES - OVERALL WINS / ALL DIVISIONS Other than COREY HUTCHINGS who has an amazing 9 Triple Crown wins overall between the Late Models and the Sportsman, other drivers to win TC events in more than one division include: CHRIS "MOOSE" DOUTON (Sportsman & Late Models) ROGER PERRY (Mini Stocks & Sportsman) BRUCE THOMAS JR (Mini Stocks & Late Models)
Current drivers who could do the same this weekend include: SK MODIFIEDS DIEGO MONAHAN ('01 Bud Nats Sportsman) SHAWN MONAHAN (Sportsman - see above) MARK ST. HILIARE (Late Model - see above) should he return in that 23 SK he was in last week LATE MODELS JAY LOZYNIAK ('03 Pepsi 300 - Sportsman) TIMMY JORDAN ('04 Pepsi 300 - Mini Stocks) GLENN COLVIN ('04 Bud Nats - Mini Stocks)
TOWN FAIR TIRE FINALE EVENT No Sportsman OR Mini Stock driver has ever won the season ending 50-lapper more than once. Drivers who can become the first in their division to do so this weekend: SPORTSMAN Joe Curioso III (2005) Roger Perry (2004) Chuck Rogers (2003) MINI STOCKS Ken Cassidy Jr (2005) Richard Brooks (2004) Phil Evans (2002) Jeff Miller (1998)
OTHER RANDOM NUGGETS:
Only MARK ST. HILIARE ('02 & '03) has won the LM Finale more than once.
RON YUHAS JR has 3 SK Finale wins ('99-'01). DENNIS GADA, the only other mod shoe with more than 1 Finale win ('02-'03) can equal that mark with a win on Saturday.
TOMMY FOX, if he should win, would not only be the 1st SK driver to win the Career Triple Crown, he'd also be the first to win even 2 of the events in the same year.
