Veteran ACT Tour competitor, Mark Lamberton from Mooers Forks, NY likes his chances at victory in Saturday’s Furniture World of Vermont 100 at Airborne Speedway, Plattsburgh, NY. Lamberton, 36, has several things going for him as the traveling Late Model Series heads to the half-mile D-shaped track for its sixth race of the 2006 season and lone stop in the Empire State.
First and foremost, the Chevrolet driver is a two-time champion at the paved speedplant having won the Late Model crown in 2000 as well as the Sportsman division title in 1993. Additionally, he is the only New York driver to win the prestigious Fall Foliage 200 in the event’s 34 year history. But more importantly, Lamberton is coming off a third place finish in Tuesday’s Re/Max Alliance 100 at New Hampshire’s Lee USA Speedway.
“I had a good car at Lee but it started to loosen up with about 20 (laps) to go,” Lamberton said. “I had to switch from an attack position to a defensive one to try and protect my real estate. Unfortunately Jeremy (Harclerode), who’s a weekly racer at Lee USA, was able to use his knowledge of the track to one up me,” he explained, continuing, “The shoe will be on the other foot Saturday at Airborne. I know that track as well as anyone,” he finished. Lamberton’s third place finish moved him from fourth into the runner-up spot in the ACT Tour standings.
In addition to Lamberton, some 30 ACT Late Models have entered and are expected to attempt to qualify for the Furniture World of Vermont 100. Among the other favorites is current ACT Tour point leader, Jean-Paul Cyr of Milton, VT, 2005 runner-up Dave Pembroke from Montpelier, VT, New Hampshire’s “Rocket” Roger Brown, 17 year-old racing sensation Joey Polewarczyk and Maine’s Steve Reny and Ron Henry. Brent Dragon, a three-time Airborne Late Model title holder and Dave Whitcomb, who also hold a Late Model championship at the Plattsburgh track are also expected to be in the hunt for victory.
Returning to Airborne after a many year absence is Hampton, Ontario driver Robbie Thompson. Thompson has a brand new Late Model which he ran to a top ten finish in the recent ACTion Super Series at Quebec’s Sanair Super Speedway.
Post time Saturday (July 22) is 6:00 pm. Adult admission is $18, children are $5 and the “Family Fare” (two adults and 2 kids) is $35.
