Driver dies at Knoxville: Sprint-car driver Steve King died [Thursday] this afternoon from injuries suffered in a crash during Wednesday night’s Knoxville Nationals, hospital officials and the family confirmed. King, 33, of Jetmore, Kan., was pronounced dead at 3:32 p.m., Mercy spokesperson Gregg Lagan said. Preliminary reports from Knoxville Raceway indicate the wreck involved only King and happened when a part broke, sending his #88 car into the Turn 3 fence during a preliminary feature. King was taken by helicopter to Mercy late Wednesday night to undergo treatment for a brain injury, according to his Web site. Knoxville race director Ralph Capitani said earlier today that Nationals races would go on as scheduled. “Our hearts, our souls, our prayers are certainly with the family,” Capitani said. There have been 15 racing-related deaths at Knoxville, according to Capitani and Des Moines Register research. The most recent death was June 16, when Courtney Roger Schuur of Fridley, Minn., was killed during a sprint-car exhibition race held as part of a once-a-year “old-timers” event. An family update on King’s Web site — www.88king.com — also confirmed King died this afternoon. “He loved you all,” a note on the Web site said. “Thank you so much for your support. Please keep our family in your prayers. Arrangement details will be posted [at www.88king.com ] once they have been made.” The 46th Knoxville Nationals are scheduled to conclude Saturday night.(Des Moines Register)(8-10-2006)

DIRT Star Brett Hearn Collects 700th Career Checkered Flag At Home Track!
On Saturday evening, August 12 ---back where it all began at the historic five-eights-mile Orange County Fair Speedway in Middletown, New York--- Brett Hearn won the 700th feature event of his 32-year racing career. For Sussex, New Jersey driver Hearn, just weeks shy of his 48th birthday, the win was his 21st this season. The victory was scored in the 25-lap DIRT 358-Modified feature. Hearn, nicknamed “The Jersey Jet,” started the race in 14th position and took the lead on lap 21. It was his fourth win in eight DIRT small-block Modified division races this year at Orange County.
Hearn’s first win was also at Orange County, in the spring of 1976 when he was just 17-years-old. His overall Orange County record stands at 275 feature wins---160 Modified, 113 Small-Block Modified, and two URC sprint car victories.
“There are so many people I have to thank for being behind me all these years,” said Hearn. “But what’s especially satisfying this time around is how well our three teams work together. We have a common goal and that’s to do the best we can every time we race.” For the 2006 season, Hearn is racing for the combined B.H. Racing Enterprises, Inc. and Madsen Motorsports effort (No. 20), Steve Hastings and Joe Knoth’s J&S Racing, Inc. team (No. 74), and Vinnie Salerno’s 4-Star Racing (No. 4*). Win number 700 came behind the wheel of Salerno’s North Rockland Towing and Four Star Transmission-sponsored car.
Hearn is one of the very few drivers in all forms of motorsports to reach the 700-win plateau. He has won races at 47 different speedways in 10 states and two Canadian provinces. Two-hundred eighty-four of these victories, over 40 percent, have been in races of 50 laps or longer, including 32 wins in races designated as “200s.”
Nearly 70% of Hearn’s wins have been scored on the DIRT MotorSports NorthEast circuit. A five-time overall Hoosier Tire-Sunoco Race Fuels Mr. DIRT Modified champion, he is DIRT NE’s all-time winningest driver with 484 (323 big-block, 161 small-block) Modified feature race triumphs since first reaching victory lane at Lebanon Valley Speedway in 1981. The 'Jet' has also flown to the top on the all-time Advance Auto Parts (89) Super DIRT Series win chart, with a division-best 62 extra-distance triumphs coming in Mr. DIRT 358-Modified Series competition.
Hearn’s record also includes more than 60 track and series championships. He is currently leading the 2006 point standings in both the DIRT Modified and DIRT 358-Modified classes at Orange County.
