ramblings july 09 2006

what a eventful day at chi-land

the race was pretty much dull for the 1st 230 laps,  as the question rised "do i have enuff fuel to the end"   it was going to boil over the last 25 laps

with 3 yellows towards the end for 1 car spins/crashes  everyone was chasing the 17 car of matt kenseth, and with 3 laps to go,  jeff gordon popped kenseth in the rear and spun kenseth out, now there is a few factors of matt spinning......  1. the car burped because a lap after the spin, he ran out of gas, 2 casey mears was on the highside, did matt get loose and gordon had too much of a run on him?  3  jeff gordon drove the car hard on purpose and took out kenseth on purpose?

the most case senerio being probally 1,  because kenseth really slowed the lap before butr jeff gordon should have used his brain and backed off,  he would have won the race anyhow,  but another thing is also is that maybe kenseth did not know the car burped because of the car noise and radio transmission,  there is alot the drivers miss at 1st with the car noise and etc to catch it the 1st time around......  nascar did do the right thing about letting it go at this point because of the possabile elments,  as for the fans throwing things at jeff gordons car,  its not cool and it gives nascar a black eye,  but if i was in the stands mins after the race i would have thrown a cooler over the fence "im kidding"

but the most surpirsing news this weekend was not what happened on the track, but off the track, juan montoya will be in nascar next year, he was quoted as saying "time for real racing again" apparenlty he was not happy in F1 and needed a change,  hes to run ganazzi dodges "42 car" next year while doing a limited schedule in the BGN and the CTS after the F1 season ends.....

mike helton who you never want him to twich his mustache imformed the BGN and CUP personal that there will be bigger repercussions for cheating and being "outside of that box"  we already know that 2 BGN crew cheifs got sent home for 6 weeks.....   i dont think a driver needs to be sent home,  because it was a off track infraction,   anything on the track should be looked at in the way of sending a driver home for the week,   for example if kyle busch throws another hans device at another car after being wrecked,  then he should sit home the next week.  that would probally be fair fetched though,

the repaving at talladega is taking place and major progress has been made,  every ounce of pavement was removed from the turns and the gravel underneath was regraded,  the strightaways were handled  in a simular manner on your local streets,  they grinded down the strights down to 2 inches roughly and there gonna pave over that so they track itself dont get higher,  same thing if it was on your street,  grind it down 2 inches then pave it over so you dont have to raise the manhole covers........

what does this mean for the track when nascar visits talladega in oct?  will the speed be any higher then it was in may?   my answer will be slightly,  i will predict that the corner speeds are not to great at this track to have a differents,  at the most you might see  5 mph more and mostly because of different shock packages to be used for the upcoming race, no more you will see the dredded bouncing and bottoming out,  the shock packages should be MUCH lighter then in the past,

if it is all sucessful for talledega,  you might see talk of daytona undergoing something simular,  the only thing that worries me that the corner speed WILL IN FACT be a factor and you might see a 7 mph or more jump if theres a new surface,

well that is it for me today............. enjoy reading

Hey Scott,

Nice post but I have a little different view, oh course being a Kenseth fan I guess it is tainted.

1) Helton just made his comments about NASCAR getting tough on cheating and expect stiffer penalties. Well, at every track errrrr... most tracks (exclude WSB) taking the leader out is rough riding and thus breaking the rules or cheating.

2) Gordon was on probation and Helton could not penalize him because it would mean a suspension and they would never dare do that to their golden boy.

3) Gordon owed Kenseth for Bristol.

and lastly,

4) Gordon owns the #48 and could have been helping protect his point lead.

Gordon could have waited a half lap and would have passed him clean. Gordon showed no remorse for dumping him. As a minimum, he should have been put to the rear but NASCAR wants him in the Chase.

Just my .02

helton should have been to the point either during inspection or post race issues with cheating,  and your right, i thought that too where if you take out the leader like that you be put in the rear too,  i guess this dont apply to cup racing

>>>2) Gordon was on probation and Helton could not penalize him because it would mean a >>>>suspension and they would never dare do that to their golden boy.

jeff gordons golden boy image in my opinon is forever gone when he pushed kenseth at bristol, even jeff burton did not like on what he did,  i think this present day golden boy has to be jimmy johnson since hes what 1st in the points right now???  i think gordon will be strickly warned after this accident

<<<<<3.) Gordon owed Kenseth for Bristol.

not sure i would use OWNED as a reason to take him out like he did,  you would expect that to happen at bristol anyways with the 1 lane follow the leader racing,  but todays race is no reason you should give the bump and run to ANYONE

<<<<<<4) Gordon owns the #48 and could have been helping protect his point lead.

this is pretty far from the truth,  but others would agree that taking out the 2nd place guy in the points<was the leader with 3 laps to go> to benifit his own team would have been distasterous for hendrick as a "team"   im pretty sure that more will follow tomarrow and tuesday on what they want to do to prevent this from happening on such a wide track as chi-land,  i guess 4 lanes in the turns was not good enuff

>>>Gordon could have waited a half lap and would have passed him clean. Gordon showed no >>>remorse for dumping him. As a minimum, he should have been put to the rear but NASCAR >>>>wants him in the Chase

when me and my father were watching the race, i uttered that same line,  "kenseth would have run out of gas anyways" or "gordon could not have waited for the next turn?"  i do agree with gordon not showing the remorse, that was bad sportsmanship and i do beleave that we are seeing gordons true colors now,

Hey Scott,

I agree with most of what you say but I am extremely frustrated with the whole WWF on wheels NASCAR we have seen evolve. Maybe WSB is closer to the big leagues than we know.

PS: fouind any cool old tracks lately? I miss your finds.

SPD it is great to have you back in our little "circle".  Definitely must agree that NASCAR wants Gordon in the Chase. I believe not having him and Jr. going for the Championship last season hurt the overall interest.

As for the Bowl ... The drivers need to reallize the track allready has a casket waiting, and their egotistical anticts are beginning to set-up plans for the tracks funeral.

Just my opinion. -WMT-

IMO,

the interest was dwindled because of the fact that nascar makes the valuation of the title worthless now,  just think of this for a minute,

in 2003 ryan newman absolutely choked for the 1st half of the year, simular of what tim rochmond did in 1986 stats wise,  and both of them did not win a race untill sometime in june,  all of a sudden ryan newman wins a race in may or june but by that time the title hopes are crushed,

by september newman is in 7th 8th in points,   but came in like 4th in points some 250 points behind by seasons end,  still winning the most of everyone that year with 7-8 races roughly,

rules of a perfect season if there was no chase

1.  do not go on a 4-5 race   skid because it will hurt you

2. a season should be 36 races and no chase,  if you blow off 2/3s of the year your not worthy of the title,

3.   ask DW terry labonte and alan kucwicki on what low number of DNFS and top 5s will do = championships

now theres the chase factor,

1.  you make sure your in the top 10 in the points at richmond, no matter if you are 700 points from the lead you still have a chance at the title,

for that number 1 reason is why nascars fanbase has been dwindled<and so has mine for a bit> because of the fact that you dont need to see the whole race because in sept the points are gonna be reset anyways,   ok im going to turn the tv on watch the race for 10 mins and see if jimmy johnson is in the top, yes he is so im gonna watch badmitton,   i beleave that is the americas viewing of the races as of now,   BUT  come sept,   the ratings might jump a bit, but by then the damage was already done

Sorry Scott but I must disagree.... somewhat.

I agree the first twenty-six races to some drivers are nothing more than making sure they are in the Top Ten in points. But as it gets down to the point of the season we are approaching things definitely heat up. You have several guys on the outside looking in, and they are going to drive just a little harder.

As for the guys 700 points behind, YES they do not deserve to win the Championship. But since the Chase began there has NEVER been a driver that even had a shot from that far back. You must be within 400 to make the Chase.

Granted there have been years where more than one driver had a legitimate shot to win the Championship in the final race, the best case I can think of is the year Alan Kulwicki won. But for the most part it has been walk-a-ways with the last few races basically meaning NOTHING.

The Chase has given a little added drama to the final race. It is NOT the perfect fix yet, but is a step in the right direction in my opinion.

well add a little drama yes,  BUT

in my years of watching racing,   there has been walk aways, but some of the recent titles before the chase came down to the last race......  i pretty much remember the 1992 season when 4-5 drivers had a mathmatical chance of winning.......    with alan kucwicki winning and he was 278 points down as of dover........  and now there saying we might have a tweak of the chase.....  i heard 12 cars instead of our present 10......   that is a but too much.....  i think the perfect chace plan would be no longer either top 10 or 400 points...  but something like a 400 point cut off PERIOD,   SPECIAL THANKS TO JAYSKI,  heres what i mean

  • Unofficial Driver Points Standing after Chicago [18 of 36 races]:
    #48-Jimmie Johnson 2651
    #17-Matt Kenseth 2603 -48
    #8-Dale Earnhardt Jr. 2394 -257
    #31-Jeff Burton 2327 -324
    #9-Kasey Kahne 2303 -348
    #6-Mark Martin 2291 -360
    #20-Tony Stewart 2274 -377
    #5-Kyle Busch 2265 -386
    #29-Kevin Harvick 2253 -398
    #24-Jeff Gordon 2219 -432>>>>>>>>missing the cut after 26 races
    and fighting for 10th
#16-Biffle National 2172 -47 out of 10th and the chase
    #11-Hamlin 2169 -50
    #2-Busch 2087 -132
    #99-Edwards 2026 -193
    For drivers/owners points, see my Jayski's Drivers/Owners Points Page.(7-9-2006)

at 26 races you might have 4 cars within 400 points........    that would be a better idea,  thus put a better part of the season BASED on winning and not going for top 5s,   this idea would cause alot of drama

Hmmm, kinda like the sound of that Scott, the whole ONLY drivers within 400 points. Problem is NASCAR is looking for ways to ALMOST insure that their "biggest names" are in the Chase.

    and that is true,

they want the "stars of nascar"  to be in the chase,  but as long as we have this going on,  there is going to be alot of people abusing alcohol in the worse way<pegging gordons car with beer cans>,    it was kind of funny last week where if i was gordons crew chief i would have past him a pastifier of his whining of "bump drafting"    but it was ok for him to do it yesterday,   this is why i think kenseth said "nascar will be conistaint with there desion"    maybe he knew that nothing would happen,  or was going to be surprised if something did come out of it......   later this evening,  INNC should be on and we will get a few more answers by then  :)

They (NASCAR) could not do anything, Gordon was on probation and would have to have been suspended. They could not do that to Dupont, Pepsi or Hendrick. They are gutless. See what is happening in the LM division at WSB? That is what Helton & crew is starting in Cup. Did you read Jeff Burton's comments about the drivers will have to settle it on the track if NASCAR doesn't handle in the trailer? Sounds like WSB....

I was looking over the TV ratings for this year over on Jayski last week and almost every race has dropped from last years level of ratings to the 2004 level. If it was just a race or two than it could be nothing but after they just signed a big new TV deal that starts next year and the ratings are going the other way, mmmm... Looks like more than fans being tired of DW, Hammond & Larry Macs babble.

I lost some respect for BP the way he crawled under the table with his response on the Gordon Kenseth deal.

BP caved under pressure bottom line,

honestly i like DW larry and mike joy,  they being somethjing onto the table that NBC would ever dream of, and that is racing knowlage!!!!!    the only thing that you dont hear or see is that bill webers papers shuffle when he gets out of place....  lol

nascar has to act quickly because what example does it prove that "we are going to stiffen peniltys if your outside the box"  what does that mean,  outside the pitbox = 3 lap penilty??  outside your garage while working on your car = uninproved adjestment to the rear????  or when the car is no more then a shreeded beer can,  you get the backup car out and they tell you know your car is fine = ????      they need to clarify on what the rules are so no drivers goes threw the cracks like last week

I thought it was interesting what Jr was saying about Gordon's rear quarters bowing in and leaving the bumper hanging out. I guess the cars don't have to fit the template when it counts as long as they do in pre & post race inspection. Funny the announcers didn't discuss it much, don't you think?

I think the TV ratings dwindle because of the product the broadcast has become and not the racing. Sorry to say but racing is a soap opera and all these little hooks and twists is what hooks  the casual fan.

Then what drives them away is this big money TV deal has become more interested in advertising then the real product (and these damned boring half mile tracks) . I know more of Denny Hamlin's hobbies then I've seen green flag laps at times it seems, I know I've seen Jeremey's pinata more times then restarts.

The chase becomes something that was needed to bait old and new people into at least paying some attention and bailing the NBC side which has been terrible since the TV deal came in 2001. I'd honestly rather watch any NFL game then the 5 minutes of racing they show between commercials.

That is some funny stuff Anon about the commercial's vs racing you see! My own personal "jury" is still out on the whole chase thing, I know it's not much fun to watch a team win the tittle by 400 points, but I just cant get used to the fact I guess that you could win it from 400 points behind with 10 races to go. It will be interesting to see again this year how the rating's fare when the NFL season start's as well.
