The Brickyard 400 8/8/2004

  •  Jeff Gordon was the winner of the Brickyard 400, it just happened to be his fourth win in this event.
  • Dale Jarrett, a two-time winner of this event was the bridesmaid this time.  Who's to say if he could have caught him if that last caution hadn't been displayed.
  • Jarrett's Yates teammate, Elliott Sadler started third on the grid, and came across to take the checkers in the same position.  He never ran any worse than sixth on Sunday.  I think Mr. Sadler may be a sleeper pick for the last ten "Chase for the Cup" sprint.  I may eat my words later.  Elliott was just given a Humanitarian award for his work with autism, and deservedly so.
  • Rookie Kasey Kahne, in his first run at the famous Brickyard, brought home to Ray Evernham a solid fourth place finish for the Dodge UAW team.
  • Tony Stewart rounded out the top five after spinning early in the race without hitting a thing.

Please feel free to post comments, and observations. And, for a complete rundown of the finish, click on the link below:

Some Nextel Cup "Gossip" 8/12/04

As reported by Nascar.com, Jeff Burton has signed a three year contract to drive for Richard Childress in the #30 AOL Car, replacing Dave Blaney starting next week at Michigan.  Replacing Jeff Burton in the #99 Roush Ford, is CTS driver Carl Edwards, also effective beginning at Michigan.

Now Jeff doesn't have to worry about Nascar shooting down his opportunity to have a "hard liquor" sponsorship, but what does this mean for Dave Blaney?  Roush had been priming Edwards for a spot in the upper division, but I personally was surprised at the timing of this announcement.  Hopefully, Dave Blaney finds something soon.

Dave Blaney gets screwed again!

A person in their 30s doesn't have the price tag like it was in the 70s and 80s, you have these young, up and coming drivers getting the nods now.  In 10 years, I think we will no longer have a driver that is 35-40, you might have to get in the sport when your 19, but where did experience go????  I remember back in the day when you had a ROOKIE that was a young pup and he was 24-26 years of age.   Basically, now all you have to do is race cars for 2-3 years and someone throws you in the car.   It's just wrong,  now we have drivers like Dave Blaney  getting the shaft.  I have to agree, I hope he gets something soon, maybe a truck ride at least, like Johnny Benson did this season.

Nascar Nextel Cup Series Watkins Glen Results

Tony Stewart was the winner in the Nascar Nextel Cup event at Watkins Glen.  2nd was road course "ringer" Ron Fellows in the DEI #1 car, who did an awesome job, but seemed more than just race weary while being interviewed post race.  Just the opposite, was the energized Mark Martin who finished 3rd, gaining valuable points toward the top ten cut-off, while point leader Jimmie Johnson blew an engine and finished 40th.

Just a side note:  Stewart had complained of illness all race long and exited his car in victory lane and declined interview.  He went directly to his motorcoach to change.  With all the recent weeks of controversy during the post-race ceremonies, I'm sure we haven't heard the last of this one, although Tony's excuse seems to be more valid than the others.

RE: Nascar Nextel Cup Series Discussion

Are you sure you didn't want to say Tony "excreted" his car, instead of exited.  It was cool, when they finally got him a "fresh driver's suit", he made his way back out to victory lane, saying "the car was great and you just do what you have to do after".  I think he meant you doodoo and then do what you do after!

One thing I will have to say is that Tony had a sense of humor about it.  He knows we all know what happened, and afterall he IS only human.

Gordon wins the Bristol Motor Speedway Pole!

In an unsurprising qualifying lap, Jeff Gordon posts the fastest time and takes down the pole.  Jimmy Johnson who's last three NNC races have ended in DNF's, has to start in the rear after a crash.   Kasey Kahne slaps the wall, but does not damage his car enough to have to go to the rear.  He is starting on the outside pole.  We are just thrilled that at least we got some qualifying in this week.  Starting straight up the last two due to inclement weather has been a bore!

Dale Earnhardt Jr. Sweeps Bristol!

NNC ran a very popular Saturday night show at the Bristol Motor Speedway.  Junior was the first driver to ever sweep both the BGN and NNC races in the same weekend at Bristol, by winning tonight in the #8 and last night in the #81.  Ryan Newman was very happy with a second place finish, and Jimmie Johnson ends his streak of despair with a solid top 3 run.  Newman ends up grabbing the coveted 10th spot in the "cut for the chase", with only 2 races to go.  For complete unofficial results, click on the link below.

Rusty Wallace Announcement 8/30/04

Rusty Wallace held a press conference today and announced that he will be hanging his helmet after the last NASCAR Nextel Cup Race of 2005.  Rusty wants to concentrate his time on his BGN team.  He will run his Busch car next season with two different NNC drivers who will split the duties.  Also rumored was that Rusty will also start up a NNC team within the next few years. We wish him well, and as racefans, we have enjoyed watching his career.

Look for a few other veteran drivers to announce their retirements as well.

Sadler Victorious in California!

Elliott Sadler will clinch his spot in the "chase for the cup" by just taking the green at Richmond International Speedway next week, after winning the POP Secret 500 tonight in California.  Sadler was elated in victory lane, thanking Todd Parrott for a great car, as well as all his sponsors and Robert Yates, and sending his love back home to Emporia, VA.  Kasey Kahne finishes second to Elliott Sadler a second time, reliving the Texas finish this last April.  Mark Martin appears renewed, and gains ones spot in the points by finishing third, and will head to Richmond 10th in points.

Richmond Rock & Roll 400 Results 9/11/04

Racefans proved tonight that they never forgot.  Pre-race ceremonies at Richmond were a touching tribute to the lives lost on that tragic day, September 11, 2001, and to the men and women still fighting to protect us from the horrible people capable of commiting those types of horrific acts again.  We at MakingLaps.com also wish to thank those brave soldiers for continuing to allow us to be able to do what we love, and feel safe doing it.  Our heartfelt gratitude to you all.

Jeremy Mayfield was in position to take the lead with less than 10 laps to go when leader Kurt Busch ran out of fuel. Dale Earnhardt Jr., fought handling problems all night, only to end up in second.  Lots of dejected drivers who complained of equipment problems, went away broken hearted from tonight's race inclding Kasey Kahne and Dale Jarrett.  Jimmie Johnson wrecked early in the night but finished the race many laps down.  In an interview, he condemned the new points structure, as well as two fellow drivers, who he said had been trying to wreck eachother for numerous laps prior the 10 car wreck.  Why was he complaining, he had already clinched  his spot weeks ago.

Follow the link below for the complete unofficial results from Nascar.com:

http://aolsvc.sports.aol.nascar.com/races/cup/2004/26/data/results_unofficial.html

Tonight's NASCAR Nextel Cup race lived up to it's expectations.  It was on the last lap that we found out who the 10 drivers would be that would continue the season's last 10 races with a chance to sit at the head table in New York City this December.  Six drivers had already clinched the first spots prior to the start, and Elliott Sadler clinched the seventh just by taking the green.  Kurt Busch, who actually could have won tonight if he hadn't run out of fuel with 8 laps to go, clinched the seventh spot early in the night.  Mark Martin with a strong finish this evening, is sitting eighth in the points with his stellar performances of late, and Jeremy Mayfield brought home tonight's winners trophy and a ninth seed in the chase for the cup.  The tenth spot was a nail biter to the end.  Chip Ganassi's pleas for the #09 car to "lay over" went unheard as Jamie MacMurray fell only 15 points short, allowing a thrilled Ryan Newman to grab that coveted 10th points position.  Now that the nitty gritty is over, 10 drivers will be cautiously racing (a terrible oxymoron) the last 10 races.  I'm sure there will be some shake-ups.  No one is hoping for a hard fight worse than Brian France though, after all, this mess was all his idea.  I don't think anyone but the champion will be completely happy with the outcome though, nature of the beast.  The top 10 in the hunt are as follows:

  1. Jeff Gordon

  2. Jimmie Johnson

  3. Dale Earnhardt Jr.

  4. Tony Stewart

  5. Matt Kenseth

  6. Elliott Sadler

  7. Kurt Busch

  8. Mark Martin

  9. Jeremy Mayfield

  10. Ryan Newman

See you in New Hampshire next week, luck to you all. Be safe, Race on.

NNC Qualifying for NHIS

Wow, Ted Christopher, although starting dead last in tomorrow's scheduled NASCAR Nextel Cup Sylvania 300 at Loudon, NH, made the show with a provisional.  Suprisingly, the team had enough points, (or the postmark was earlier on the entry form) than the Dale Earnhardt Inc. #1 car, piloted this weekend by Martin Truex Jr.  We knew that was coming....  But it would have been a good track for Martin, too bad he couldn't have taken time.  No doubt he would have made the show with his experience at NHIS and that car and team.

As for the chase for the cup: It's really too bad that thay have to start straight up, but when they take the green we will have a good indication of what the next few races will be like.  No passing, single file.  It will be very important to finish every race, and I don't forsee too many drivers taking very many chances.

Wednesday Night on CBS

CBS needed a way to sway the negative attention they have been receiving recently due to bad publicity regarding the upcoming presidential election, forged documents, and some poor judgement calls made by CBS.  What better way than to interview one of the popular young heroes of America's 2nd most popular sport of autoracing, Dale Earnhardt Jr.  Mike Wallace (no, not that Mike Wallace, but the Mike Wallace of 60 Minutes, who recently had his own Tony Stewart/Robby Gordon type tantrum on a NYC street), interviews Jr. tomorrow night on 60 Minutes at 8:00pm EST.  CBS will air a taped rare one on one interview with Jr.  and, although I am extremely excited and interested to watch, I just think the timing is a bit suspicious.  But I will be tuned in, like most NASACR fans, TIVO at the ready, just to see what Jr. has to say... Especially about his Dad.

RE: Nascar Nextel Cup Series Discussion

It was starting to get old hearing "Front Row Joe" when he hadn't had a pole in a while.  But Talladega is his "pole place", and for the third time, Joe Nemechek receives the Bud Pole Award for qualifying fastest at in Alabama.  Watch out for "the big one" Joe!

For the full line up of the next "plate" race of the season, follow the link below:

http://aolsvc.sports.aol.nascar.com/races/cup/2004/29/data/lineup.html/index.html

On a selfish note: I'm thrilled that the top ten fastest qualifiers are a mix of not just the "top ten" guys.  But then again, you can go from 1st to 30th in one lap at Talladega.  All 3 DEI "cats" are in the race, Kenny Wallace starts 43rd in the #1 Aaron's car, Jr 10th, and Mikey 14th.

Kudos to Hermie Sadler who qualified and uncharacteristic 11th for Sunday's race in the East Tennesee Trailers Ford.  Wouldn't have anything to do with that Yates power under the hood, would it.   Congratulations Hermie, Three Yates cars in the top 11!

Dale Jr and other things

Well unless you took a little nap under a rock for a few days, you all well know Dale Earnhardt Jr has been fined $10,000 and more importantly docked 25 precious CHACE FOR THE CUP points, for his use of profanity in victory lane after winning Sundays Talladega race. Now Jr's contention is he used the S-WORD IN celabration not anger as Johny Sauter did earlier in the year (and was subsequently fined and docked points). DEI plans an appeal saying the loss of points is devastating in the chace points set up. Nascar however stood by there policy since the beggining of the season which warned drivers against use of profanity

In other news: John Andretti will team with Bgn series owner Greg Pollex to drive the #14 Victory Brand Ford in all the remaining Nextel Cup events except Martinsville in the 04 season, and a full schedule in 05. Now of interest in this deal, Victory Brand is a cigarette maker HMMM.. and also Pollex Bgn team is in search of a sponsor for the 05 season, putting longtime team driver Jason Keller's job in jepaordy. Pollex said if he is forced to scale back to a partial Bgn schedule because of lack of sponsorship, Andretti could also drive the Bgn car.

Martinsville results 10/24/04

Jimmie Johnson makes it two in a row as he wins at Martinsville. A side note: A Hendrick Motorsports plane enroute to the track crashed. We have posted one link,  with the full results of the race, and a story  from Nascar.com on the crash. We send our sympathies to Hendrick Motorsports and the familys of the victims.

http://aolsvc.sports.aol.nascar.com/races/cup/2004/32/data/results_unofficial.html

Report of plane crash near Bull Mountain

Radio traffic indicates a plane crash occurred around 11:45am this morning in the Stuart, Patrick Springs, Bull Mountain area.

Sketchy information at this hour indicates the plane was headed to the Blue Ridge Airport in Spencer and with six occupants including the pilot.

Helicopters are now flying over the area trying to find the downed aircraft. We have just learned one of the racing team helicopters has now joined in the search.

Update 1 - 2:51pm: A helicopter has located the signal of the emergency locating transmitter of the downed aircraft, but due to extreme fog, they are unable to see the plane.

Update 2 - 2:52pm: State Police have determined the coordinates and are dispatching four-wheelers to the scene.

Update 3 - 2:53pm: A break in the fog has allowed the helicopter crew to get a visual on the crash scene. They report "there does not appear to be any survivors."

Update 4 - 3:30pm: Unconfirmed... the plane is alleged to be owned by Hendrick Motorsports and was headed to Martinsville for today's race.

Update 5 - 3:40pm: Fire and rescue have been advised to seal the entire area off to all media.

Update 6 - 5:13pm: The FFA and the NTSB has confirmed the downed plane was owned by Hendrick Motorsports and took off from Concord, NC. Officials have confirmed everyone onboard was killed, but no names have been released.

Update 7 - 5:23pm: We have received a partial list of the deceased. They are: Ricky Hendrick, John Hendrick, Kimberly Hendrick, Jennifer Hendrick, Len Morrison, and Scott Latham. Again, this is a partial list and remains unconfirmed, although the source of the information comes from the Martinsville Speedway.

We'll have further updates regarding this story as it becomes available. (10/24/04)

Phoenix results 11/7/04

Dale Earnhardt Jr wins the Checker Auto Parts 500 at the Phoenix Raceway. For the complete finishing order follow the link below:

A side note: Kevin Harvick and Kasey Kahne were involved in some, "after the checker activity" on track, and ended up "parked" against each other on pit road. Both crews assembled and words were exchanged, but officials were quick to separate everyone. Were sure fines will be issued for things "spilling" over on to pit road.
