SPECIAL HAPPENINGS SUNDAY AT THUNDER ROAD

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE                                                                      TR-061306-2

BARRE, VT – Thunder Road’s race fans and competitors hope the third time’s a charm Sunday when the American-Canadian Tour (ACT) Sportsman Series makes its third attempt at the Casella Mother’s Day 100.  Originally scheduled for Sunday, May 14 (Mother’s Day), the event was rained out before a single lap was turned at the high-banked, quarter-mile oval.

Things fared a bit better at the event’s June 4 second attempt.  First and second round qualifying took place for the 37 Sportsman Series competitors although the all-important “Last Chance/”B” Feature” was not contested.  Thunder Road’s Late Models, Allen Lumber Street Stocks have completed some of their qualifying events.  In addition to the day’s features – the Casella Mother’s Day 100 for the Sportsman, and a 50-lap main for the Late Models as well as the Streets (25 laps) and Warriors (15 laps), the highly anticipated Late Model Semi-Feature will be held.

For fans of the older-style race cars, a special appearance is on tap Sunday by the coupe division from Bradford’s Bear Ridge Speedway.  Even though Bear Ridge is also a quarter-mile oval, the drivers are used to slip-sliding their machines through the slightly banked corners.  The competitors jumped at the chance to tackle Thunder Road’s historic high banks.

Also scheduled to appear are a contingent of go-carts from the Northeast Kart Club (NEKC) in a race exhibition.

And since Thunder Road will be celebrating both Mother’s and Father’s Days on Sunday, the track will attempt to determine that age old question of who is a better driver - Moms or Dads.  A special match race will be contested between representative Moms and Dads.

Rain check tickets from the June 4 Casella Mother’s Day 100 will be honored for the 1:30 pm event.  Spectator gates will open at 10:00 am.  General admission tickets will also be available on race day.  The adult price is $10, kids, (ages 6-12), are $3 and the $20 bargain “Family Fare” admits any two adults and two kids (6-12).

The Casella Mother’s Day 100 is the second of seven events for ACT’s Sportsman Series.  Plattsburgh, New York’s Robin Wood, winner of the season opening Adirondack Auto Spring Green 100 at Airborne Speedway on May 6 leads the point standings heading into Sunday’s event.
