Carquest Extreme Tuesday News

From WhoWon.com

Stafford Motor Speedway’s CARQUEST Extreme Tuesday program has once again put together an all-star cast of drivers who will match their driving talents against one another in the CARQUEST Clash, a 15-lap match race with the Premier Racing Association’s Big Car Series cars as the vehicles of choice. Competing in this year’s CARQUEST Clash will be 2-time Indy 500 winner Al Unser, Jr., Rusty Wallace, Sara Fisher, Dave Steele, and Sammy Swindell, who finished second to Ken Schrader in last year ’s Clash.

Al Unser, Jr. is a two-time Indy 500 champion, and one of the most versatile racers of his generation. Along with his two Indy 500 triumphs are 31 career Champ Car wins, 3 IndyCar victories, two Champ Car Championships, two IROC Championships, and a 24 Hours of Daytona victory. Unser returned to the Indy 500 this year, where he finished 24th after crashing out of the event.

After competing in this year’s running of the Rolex 24 at Daytona, Rusty Wallace makes a second return to racing after retiring from NASCAR at the end of the 2005 season as one of the greatest stock car drivers in the history of the sport. Wallace is the 1989 Nextel Cup champion, and he has 55 career Nextel Cup victories. Wallace currently serves as the color anchor of ABC and ESPN’s coverage of the Indy Racing League, and he owns a NASCAR Busch Series team with Jamie McMurray and his son Steven serving as the team’s co-drivers. While Wallace is known primarily for his NASCAR exploits, he earned USAC Rookie of the Year honors in 1979 while competing against the likes of A.J. Foyt and other racing legends.

After finishing second to Ken Schrader in last year’s Clash, Sammy Swindell returns to Stafford for another chance at driving to victory. Swindell began his racing career on dirt tracks when he was 15 years old, and he is a two-time World of Outlaws champion. Earlier this season, Swindell took the checkered flag at Las Vegas Motor Speedway to record his 267th career World of Outlaws A-Main Feature victory. Swindell was inducted into the Sprint Car Hall of Fame.

Anyone who has followed USAC Silver Crown racing over the last decade will certainly know the name of Dave Steele. Steele is the 2004 Silver Crown Series champion, and he is the all-time career lap leader in Silver Crown history. Steele has accumulated numerous victories in USAC Sprints, Midgets, and Silver Crown.

Sarah Fisher made a name for herself while driving in the Indy Racing League, and she is now looking to further her career in NASCAR. Fisher was the IRL Most Popular Driver from 2001-2003, and her second place finish at Homestead in 2001 still ranks as the highest finishing position for a woman in an open wheel Indy Car event. Fisher was also the first woman to win a pole position in the IRL, taking the pole at Kentucky Speedway in 2002.

Last season, Fisher drove in the NASCAR Grand National West Series for car owner Bill McAnally as part of Richard Childress’ driver development program.

Prior to the CARQUEST Clash, all five drivers will participate in a meet and greet autograph session on Stafford’s midway. Tickets for the CARQUEST Extreme Tuesday program are available and are on sale now at the Stafford Speedway Box Office. Tickets are $30.00 for adult general admission, $5.00 for children 6-14, and free for children 5 & under. Reserved seating is $32.00 for all ages. Stafford Speedway offers plenty of free parking with overnight parking available.
