Hudson Speedway Results

The Hudson Speedway returned to action on Memorial Day, with a full card of racing hitting the track on another beautiful, sunny afternoon.  The Strictly Stocks were back in town for the second race of their 2006 season, and they led off the day’s feature event action.

Polesitter Scotty Duval of Manchester brought the field around to take the green flag, but it was outside pole starter Mike Williams of Epsom who jumped out to grab the early lead.

Moving up after a championship season in the Rookie Stocks in 2005, Williams is already showing some speed.

Jim Osborne, another Epsom-based driver, broke out of the pack next, and he headed out in pursuit of leader Williams.  Rick Woodside, Jr., a winner on Saturday at the Star Speedway, was next to join the chase, moving quickly up to third.

Halfway through, the leads trio was still leading the way, with Corey Masson of Dracut, MA and Rob MacRae of Billerica, MA giving chase.  Nobody was able to pose a serious threat to Williams, who went the distance to pick up the win.  Osborne finished in the runner-up spot, with Masson, Woodside and MacRae the rest of the top five.

The Roadrunners were up next, with Hooksett driver Jason Day leading them to the start.  Peter Raby of Manchester was hooked up in the early laps, setting the pace until Tim Broman came a long and knocked him off the point.

Once out front, Broman was off and running, while the full field put on some exciting side-by-side and three-wide racing further back.  At the checkers, it was Broman in to score his first win of the season, with Dana Faulkner second and 2005 Thunder Light champ “Racin’ Jason” Ferreira third.  Harry Robinson and Raby closed out the top five.

Jack Tucker jumped out from the pole to lead the first two laps of the Rookie Stock feature, but Kenny Scott of nearby Salem knocked him off to grab the top spot the third time around.  Scott continued to lead the next several laps, but when halfway approached, so did John Swain.

Swain ran strong in the outside groove to pick them off one by one on his way to the front, and he got past Scott for the lead just as they reached the crossed flags.  Swain immediately began to distance himself from the pack, opening a comfortable lead.

He was unbeatable the rest of the way, and he pulled away to score a convincing win.  Mike Coulter of Littleton, MA came on strong late in the race to grab second, with Scott, Darlene Borodowka and opening day winner Roland Laplante third through fifth.

The Thunder Lights were the final regular division to roll out for feature event action, with Anthony Nadeau of New Boston and John Dubois of Auburn bringing them to the green flag.

Fremont’s Lance Barthelemy was on the move quickly, flying past Eddie Gilman and then the front row starters to establish himself as the driver to beat.  With the pack mixing it up behind him, he opened up a few car length lead, with Joe Jodoin of Epping moving up to second.

When they reached the halfway point, it was still Barthelemy and Jodoin out front, with Jessica Coulter, Nadeau and C.J. McLaughlin next in the running order.  C.J. got past Jessica for third, but there was no stopping Barthelemy, who went on to score his first win of the year.  Jodoin, McLaughlin, Coulter and Nadeau rounded out the top five.

The 4 cylinder Enduro saw Barrington’s Alby Ovitt trying to shake off a pesky Jeremy Kiah over the first half of the race, with Seabrook’s Kiah glued to his back bumper the whole time.  Shortly after halfway, Kiah lost the second spot to the hard-charging Dennis Dube, who was looking for his second win of the weekend.

But Ovitt would have no part of that, as he stayed out front for the entire 50-lap distance to pick up the win.  Methuen, MA driver Dube checkered second, with Darren Jacobs, Kiah and Jesse Tellier of Pelham the rest of the top five.

Looking to double up on the weekend after winning the Grand Enduro at Star on Saturday, Raymond’s Steve Douphinette did just that, dominating the action on his way to yet another win.  The newest member of the Douphinette gang, Mark Parenteau, finished second, with Mike Legere, Dave McGrath and Mark Roche third through fifth.

John Post of Nashua grabbed the win in the one-on-one drags, Patrick Sheehan of Amesbury, MA topped the flagpole race, and Steve Clark of Hudson won the 10-lap spectator’s race, which saw Dave Kanstock take a wild ride, flipping into the backstretch tire barrier.

The next event at Hudson Speedway runs on June 11, switching to the twilight schedule with gates opening at 1, practice at 2, and racing taking the first green flag at 3:00 p.m.  On the program are the Rookies, Roadrunners, Thunder Lights, Mini Cups and Classic Lites.
