Joey Logano Getting Back to Business in Pro Cup South
16-Year-Old JGR Development Driver Overcomes Spin at Southern National, Grabs Top 10
MOORESVILLE, NC (July 24, 2006) – “Kill ’em with consistency.” It’s a phrase used by many in racing these days, especially when points racing. Young Joey Logano doesn’t like to points race, but sometimes, in the long run, it’s the best thing to do.
“Killing ’em with consistency” is the best way to describe the 16-year-old’s 2006 USAR Hooters Pro Cup Series Southern Division season thus far. Even through the Joe Gibbs Racing Development Driver won a race earlier in the season, since then, he’s been making ground in the point standings with a string of top-10 finishes.
Saturday night, Logano continued that streak, finishing eighth at Southern National Raceway Park in the Sears 250. It was Logano’s seventh top-10 finish in 10 races thus far this year.
“We turned a bad situation into a halfway decent situation tonight,” said Logano. “It was a rough night, or at least looked like it was going to be a bad one. We were third quickest in practice. We went out to qualify and the car was no good. The car was tight, I can promise you that. The car was just as tight all night long then.
“On lap 70, we got spun out. When I had spun out and had all those cars looking at me, it was wild. That was no fun. So we came in early and got our tires and tried to loosen the car up and it was still tight. It was a bear to drive; that’s for sure.
“We went to the front, went to the back, went to the front, went to the back. We did that about six times. I’m happy with it. To have all of that happen and come back and get a top-10 finish tells a lot about this team.”
Logano fought his way through the field, running as high as third at one point. Then, he fell back after a long, hard battle with fellow teen Trevor Bayne. Late in the race, the two put on a ferocious side-by-side battle, with Logano getting the upper hand.
“That was going to get big when we came up on the lapped car,” added Logano. “I was looking at that lapped car and thinking ‘you’d better get out of the way.’ It was getting big back there in the back of the pack.
“It’s too bad though because I really waned to win this race for my crew chief Tony Blanchard. This is his home track and he had all of his family here. It would have been neat to get that for him here. We tried with all we got, we just came up short.
“We did a good job at turning things around.”
Logano will now have several weeks to get ready for the final two Southern Division races of the season. The series returns to action at Peach State Speedway in Jefferson, GA on August 12th.
