Calling it "fun in it's purest form", Swanzey,NH pro stock racer Russ Hersey recently announced the formation of a three driver team that will share the steering wheel duties on a recently purchased modified racer for the 2006 True Value Modified Racing Series.
Hersey, entering his 17th season of competition, recently took ownership of a Bruce Batchelder racer and will share the driving duties with 23 year veteran driver Jeff Zuidema, North Brookfield, MA and former Claremont modified racer Chris Norton. They have a plan in place. Each driver has his own role and each driver measures up in stature. "I am going to continue in the outlaw pro stocks at Monadnock" said Hersey. He added, "When the tour comes to Monadnock, I'll drive the car, when the tour goes to Waterford, Seekonk and Thompson Jeff get the ride and when the tour heads to Canaan and Lee it will be Chris at the wheel". Hersey went on, “When I chose the three driver system, I purposely sought out drivers around my size. We are all around the same height and weight so we won't have to make changes". The new effort will have power provided by Bob Bruneau. Hersey says he plans to have the new modified ready for the Motorsports Madness 2006 show scheduled for the Cheshire Fairgrounds in Keene March 31 through April 2.
How does the champion of the True Value Modified Racing Series spend his off season? "Watching lots of football, going hunting and snowmobiling" said Kirk Alexander,Swanzey,N.H. recently. Alexander has enjoyed the break from racing but now that the calendar has turned another year, he said, "I am anxious to get going, we are looking forward to defending the title and also our other endeavor". That endeavor Alexander speaks of is a five race deal with the Springfield MA, based team Czarnecki Racing, the same team that New England Hall of Famer Bob Polverari drove for last year. They plan to compete in five selected shows on the NASCAR Modified Tour but as Alexander says he is not giving up on the series that he claimed the championship on in it's first two years of existence. "As far as I can see, the only conflicting date is Labor Day weekend at Canaan other than that we plan to be there"
In other developments, a change in the schedule has been announced. The Saturday night July 14 event at the Seekonk MA Speedway has been dropped by the tracks management as it was felt it was too close to the "Modified Madness" date of July 26 . As a result, Lee USA Speedway, Lee,NH has secured the available date and placed it on their schedule for Sept 24. The Lee track will run the TVMRS in conjunction with the "Lee Nationals Late Model Championship" at the 3/8 mile oval. Earlier in the season, the tour will join forces with the ACT for twin 100's on May 19 at Lee.
Fans that enjoy racing collectibles will he happy to hear that the TVMRS is getting in on the action. Plans are underway to market the 1/64 scale modifieds of tour champion Kirk Alexander, 3rd place point man Dwight Jarvis and 4th place finisher Jimmy Kuhn.Jr.. The custom cars will be
created by C&C Souvenirs.
Veteran driver Bruce Batchelder, Springfield VT has purchased the # 25 car owned and driven by Gary Casella Saugus MA. Long time racer Rusty Ball, Keene,N.H. will be entering his 35th year of active competition while tour announcer John Spence Sr. will again call the action this year, his 30th behind the microphone.
