“Alexander Claims Second Consecutive Title, Seuss Most Popular”
Approximately 250 people filed into White River Junction Vt. function facilty Endless Possibilities Saturday night Nov 12 to honor the 2005 True Value Modified Racing Series Champion and to present it’s annual achievement awards for the just concluded racing season , the second for the new traveling tour . West Swanzey N.H. veteran racer Kirk Alexander took down top honors as he won his second consecutive title based on a tour record 12 wins in 2005. Alexander beat out fellow veteran racer Peter Daniels, Lebanon N.H., for the second consecutive season . Daniels, the former NASCAR National Champion, recently announced his retirement from competition after a successful 22 year career . Ascutney Vt. veteran Dwight Jarvis received third place honors based on strong finishes and an August win, West Bridgewater Ma, veteran Jimmy Kuhn Jr. finished fourth in the standings his first year in the second year series while Holyoke Ma, driver Chris Wenzel finished fifth based on four top five finishes and eight in the top ten .Veteran driver and New England Hall of Fame member Bob Polverari , Springfield, Ma ., was sixth in the seasonal standings , East Harland Ct ‘s Dale Evonsion was seventh , Ed Dachenhausen , Danbury Ct., eighth , Les Hinckley , Windsor Locks Ct ., ninth and Gary Casella , Saugus Ma., tenth. All competitors were presented trophies by tour founder Jack Bateman on behalf of the series signature sponsor, True Value.
Master of Ceremonies John Spence Sr, the tour’s announcer, recognized the retiring Polverari for his accomplishments including seven decades of competition , five track championships at the former Riverside Park , his 1981 win of the Spring Sizzler race at Stafford Ct beating the legendary Richie Evans by inches and his 2003 induction in the NEAR Hall of Fame.. Polverari only days earlier celebrated his 69th birthday and competed in a modified race in Concord North Carolina. The night was also highlighted by a new yearly award presented by Polverari to the driver that best exemplifies professionalism both on and off the speedway, a trademark that Polverari was best known for. The first annual “711 Award” was presented to veteran driver Dwight Jarvis.
New Hampton NH racer Luke Royea was crowned the “ Close Call Rookie of the Year “
award while Wenzel was awarded the “ Sportsmanship Award “ . Chuck Montville , owner of Les Hinckley’s # 06 modified , was awarded the “Hard Luck” award. Montville saw his car in victory lane on opening night in April and four top five finishes over the first five events but their luck would change shortly thereafter with a streak of tough luck. “Most Improved” driver was Bethel Ct’s Jimmy Dolan. Five top ten finishes including a career first win at Lee NH last month earned Dolan the award.
The 2005 recipient of the most popular driver award as voted on by the fans of the series through an independent internet based voting system was second year driver Andy Seuss, Hampstead, NH. Seuss, the 2004 Rookie of the Year recipient, won his first career modified win in September at the Seekonk Mass Speedway.
