It’s Locals and Visitors in Canaan Fall Final
(Naples. ME – October 23, 2005) A mix of 170 cars from NH, VT, MA, ME, CT, and NY signed in Saturday at Canaan Fair Speedway, Canaan, NH for the Fall Final, and with a temperature of 27 when the gates opened at 7 am, it was more like early Winter.
A full field of 24 PASS Outlaw Late Model/Pro Stocks took the green for 100 green-flag laps with heat winners Paul White of Corinna, ME in the #15 and Bobby MacArthur of Beverly, MA in the # 55 on the front row followed by Ralph Nason of Unity, ME in the #66 with a 400 crate motor and local favorite and multi-time Canaan champion Donnie Lashua of Canaan on the outside.
White held the lead for the first 16 laps with MacArthur right behind until a spin by Scott Patten of Belmont, NH in the #17 brought out the first yellow. On the restart MacArthur jumped to the point with White falling in behind.
On lap 26, the #78 of Quinny Welch of Lancaster, NH and the #70 of Jeff Morgan of Saco, ME both went around in turn four bringing out the second yellow of the day. Five laps later, the #36X of David Crowdley of Langdon, NH spun by himself in turn 2.
On the restart, the #38 of “Rockin Rodney” Brooks of Rockland, ME got into the #66 of Nason coming out of turn four while battling for second and they both ended up in the front stretch wall, unfortunately taking the #36 of Jay Sands of Seabrook, NH and the #14 of Katie Hagar of Nobleboro, ME with them.
On the restart, the #20X of Matt Pepin of Webster, NH, in another 400 crate motor, took the lead out of turn two from MacArthur. In the meantime, Mike Rowe of Turner, ME in the #88 with a spec ZZ4 motor was up to seventh after starting at the back.
The #36X went around again bringing out the fifth yellow, and on the restart Pepin and Donnie Lashua in the #08 went side by side for several laps until Lashua took the lead.
At halfway, it was Lashua, Pepin, Walt Hammond of Canaan in the #97 up from starting scratch, the #02 of Russ Clark of Littleton, NH in a good run, the #57 of Zig Geno of Canterbury, NH in another 400 crate motor, Rowe, MacArthur, and Richard Pelton of Scarborough, ME in the #27 Outlaw “Green Monster” that dominated at Beech Ridge in September.
At lap 53, the #14 of Hagar spun coming out of turn four and MacArthur had no place to go bringing out the yellow. Nason retired to the pits with possible rear end troubles and was through for the day.
It was starting to drizzle as the caution came out for a spin by the #36X on lap 62. The field was slowed down as officials looked for a leaker, and Mike Rowe was sent to the pits with a hole in the oil pan, which finished an exciting run from the back with the ZZ4 motor.
On the restart, it was Lashua with business partner Hammond on the outside, Pepin third, and Geno fourth. Lashua pulled out to a three car-length lead with Hammond, Pepin, and Clark right behind.
At lap 65 the yellow flew again, this time for rain. After about fifteen minutes of light but persistent rain on the 40-degree day, it was decided to call it a day and give the Enduro cars a chance to get their race in before the heavy rain seen on the radar arrived.
It was a good day for the locals. Lashua and Hammond could practically walk home from the race after their one-two finish. Pepin took his second third in the two PASS Outlaw Late Model/Pro Stock races run so far, Russ Clark was fourth, Geno, the Canaan pro stock champion, was fifth, Ferriera sixth, Pelton seventh, Brian Henry eighth, Bryon Baker of Claremont, NH in the #11 ninth, and Mike Rowe was credited with tenth.
In the Cyclone feature, it was the #66 of Jerrod Ledger of Groveton, NH taking the win, followed by the #122 of Tosy Wells of Richmond, NH, and the #19 of Rod Knudsen of E. Concord, VT.
Dillon Moltz of Waterford, CT took the checkers and nailed down the points championship in the Allison Legacy Car feature. Mike Martindale of Newburgh, NY was second, and the #3 of Kraig Coffin of Uxbridge, MA was third.
In the Strictly Stock feature, it was a “United Nations” finish. It was the #56 of Mike Short of Auburn, ME (Oxford Plains), the #29 of David Wildes of Limington, ME (Beech Ridge) second, the #35 of Alby Ovitts of Barrington, NH (Lee) third, followed by the #19 Russ Thistlewood of Hollis, ME (Beech Ridge), the #9 of Jeremy Davis of Tamworth, NH (White Mountain), and the #11 of Travis Cass of Claremont, NH (Twin States).
In the Street Stock/Limiteds feature, 28 of the 32 cars signing in took the green flag in the 75 lapper that was reduced to 50 laps due to the threatening skies. Bill Jackson of Buxton, ME in a 17 year-old chassis that has served the racing Morse family well over the years took the win, followed by the #40 of Mike Landry of Oakland, ME, the #77 of Jay Coulter of Salem, NH, and the #35 of Bobby Nadeau of Hollis, ME.
The day and the season ended with Jonah Delgenio of Keene, NH taking the $3000 in the 150 lap enduro.
