Now with all that out of the way.....Let's make some laps!
Winchester, NH: Kirk Alexander clinched victory number six Saturday night with the True Value Modified Racing Series making their fourth appearance at Monadnock Speedway. It was standing room only at the fastest 1/4 mile in the east with over 3,000 fans on hand for a night of action packed racing and fireworks.
Twenty-six teams were in attendance to challenge for one of the twenty-two starting positions for the 100 lap feature event. Dave Nichols of Chester, Vermont in the Cota and Cota number 22 had an impressive qualifying run finishing second to Jimmy Kuhn. Nichols having tough luck in qualifying for previous events only making his third 2005 start with the True Value Modified Racing Series. Roger Raymond in the 62 finished first in the second qualifier making the front row for the feature Kuhn and Raymond. Jack Bateman in the 17 of Canaan, NH started in the third spot after a strong run in the third qualifier. Tough luck fell on the rookies of True Value Modified Racing Series as Luke Royea in the 2, Tom Abele in the 32 and Butch Perry in the 96 were sent home. Les Mardanes of Claremont, NH in the 11 and Warren Mordenti in the 57 ended their night as well not qualified for the 100 lap feature.
Rolling thunder took to the track led by Jimmy Kuhn and Roger Raymond. Flagman John Spence Jr. brought the field to green out of turn four. Kuhn led lap one with Jack Bateman in the 17 and Bruce Batchelder of Springfield, VT in the 77 taking over third. Roger Raymond got shuffled back on the start and settled in behind Batchelder. Bateman challenged Kuhn putting on a show for the fans racing side by side for numerous laps. Eventually Bateman fell in behind Kuhn in the second spot. Series dominator Kirk Alexander in the JGS Construction number 43 started at the rear of the field and made his way up through the pack when contact with the 22 of Dave Nichols sent Alexander spinning in turn four. No caution came out as Alexander saved the spinning car and came back out onto the track prior to being lapped by leader Jimmy Kuhn.
The first caution of the night came on lap forty for fluid on the track that sent the 9 of Dennis Albro to the pits with motor issues. Track crews laid down speedy dry to clean up the on track fluid as John Spence readied the field to go green again. The front row was Kuhn and Bateman followed by the 06 of Les Hinckley and veteran tour driver Bob Polverari in the 7 making up the second row. Kuhn remained the leader when the caution came out for the 22 of Dave Nichols spinning in turn one. No laps completed the restart went back to the last completed lap. Bateman attempted to challenge Kuhn but would be shuffled back to fourth as Hinckley's 06 took the second spot followed by young gun Andy Seuss in the One Stop Toy Shop number 70.
With Kuhn leading at half way point the 72 team collected the Black Mountain Painting half way bonus. Hinckley made his move just past the half way point in the Chuck Montville owned 06. On lap fifty two Hinckley attempted to dive under Kuhn as they came out of turn two. Hinckley's car getting into the speed bumps made him loose and spun bringing out the third caution of the night. The new front row for the green was Kuhn and Seuss but those who thought Alexander's early spin would hurt a top spot finish found Alexander now in the third position ready to challenge. The green dropped and Kuhn and Seuss battled side by side coming through turns one and two and down the back stretch. Kuhn kept the lead until lap fifty three when the front row went three wide coming out of turn three. Seuss and Alexander got under Kuhn leaving him no where to go but back. Seuss took over the lead with Alexander on his back bumper patiently waiting to make his move. Alexander took to the outside of Seuss as they battled side by side for another amazing show of racing as Kuhn and Bateman had done earlier in the night. Kirk Alexander prevailed taking charge of the night on lap sixty pulling out front of Seuss and walking away from the field.
Alexander dominated the field with a half a track lead leaving Seuss and Kuhn to battle for second. Seuss had a comfortable gap between himself and Kuhn but lap traffic and an unhappy Hinckley who had once challenged for the lead was being lapped. Hinckley put up a road block after leader Alexander got by him leaving Seuss and Kuhn backing off the power to avoid carnage to the pack of cars racing out of turn four. Seuss and Kuhn would made it through the road block laid out by Hinckley but not without damage to innocent bystanders racing for position. At the end of the night Hinckley received a penalty for his actions placing him to finish in the last position.
John Spence Jr. threw down the checkered on lap 100 giving Alexander his sixth win of the 2005 season. Alexander has won all but two events for the True Value Modified Racing Series closing the points gap on points leader Peter Daniels in the RSD Leasing number 76. Only eleven points now separate the 2004 Champion Kirk Alexander and NASCAR National Champion Peter Daniels.
Kirk Alexander collected the Sunoco Hard Charger Award for the night after passing twenty one positions. Sherwood Racing Wheels Award for the fifth place position was awarded to Dwight Jarvis in the 28.
