FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE ACT-062605-2 CANAAN, NH -- Merrimac, MA stock car driver, A.J. Begin used a late race restart to nose ahead of leader Phil Scott on lap 87 in the ACT Tour's incident plagued Ferguson Waterworks 100 Sunday at the one-third mile Canaan Fair Speedway. When the caution flew for the 17th and final time one lap later, Begin didn't care - he was in the lead, in the coveted inside lane and Scott would have to get around him. He never did and Begin went on to become the fourth consecutive winner on the ACT Tour in four race events. "My Dad always said that if you are on the outside stay right on the guy's door, so that's what I did. I knew I had to make Phil "(Scott) drive around me. I hugged the inside and gave him the lane," Begin said in Victory Lane. Scott, from Montpelier, VT, a former two-time Late Model Champion at Barre, Vermont's Thunder Road Speedbowl was second and Lancaster, New Hampshire's Roger Brown was third after coming from the back of the 29-car starting field twice after being involved in on-track incidents. Dave Pembroke, the ACT Tour point leader entering Sunday's Ferguson Waterworks 100 was fourth and retained his advantage. Rookie sensation, Scott Payea from Milton, VT posted his fourth top five finish in as many starts and maintained his top three placing in the point standings.. Ambient air temperatures exceeding the 95-degree mark took their toll on many of the ACT Tour competitors as the cockpit temperatures substantially exceeded that mark. Several competitors were not able to finish the race due to driver exhaustion. Following the race several drivers mentioned that the heat had affected their on-track performance, "I could feel myself making mistakes," one was heard to say. Thirty-five competitors attempted to qualify for the main event. Completing the top ten were defending Tour Champion and winner of the ACT Tour event at White Mountain Motorsports Park, Jean-Paul Cyr in sixth, Eric Chase, Mike Collins, Joey Laquerre and Quinny Welch. The ACT Tour's point standings underwent a shuffling as several of the top drivers encountered problems at the Canaan Fair speedplant while others capitalized on the misfortune of others. Phil Scott and Roger Brown both advanced by virtue of their top three finishes. Others moving forward into the top ten in the standings include Chase, Mark Durgin and Jamie Fisher. Fisher's advancement comes in spite of pummeling the frontstretch wall to bring out the final caution of the day. Milton, VT driver, Brent Dragon, who trailed Pembroke by 24 points entering Sunday's race, dropped to fourth after finishing 17th, 21 laps down due to the heat. David Avery of Lincoln, NH was fifth entering the Ferguson Waterworks 100 and following an engine failure in his qualifying heat and drops to eighth, but still within striking distance. The ACT Tour's fifth of ten events is slated for Saturday, July 30 at Maine's Oxford Plains Speedway. The Sun Journal 100 was originally scheduled for Mid-May but was rained out. ACT's Tiger Sportsman Series accompanied the Tour in their own Ferguson Waterworks 50 at Canaan, the fourth race of their eight race Series. And like the ACT Tour, a fourth different driver was in the Winner's Circle. Chip Grenier of Northfield, VT used a daring three-wide move on the front stretch as the lead pack entered the second lap of the event to power into the lead en route to his fourth career Sportsman Series win. He had started fourth in the 25-car field. Pole sitter and second place point man, Robin Wood from Plattsburgh, NY started on the pole and led the first circuit but was not able to mount a serious challenge once Grenier had the lead. Several other drivers took shots at the leader but a lack of cautions kept the field under racing conditions and allowed Grenier to stretch his lead. During the four instances when the yellow did come out, Grenier was able to powered away from the second place car. Eventual runner-up, Shawn Fleury attempted to run Grenier down in the closing circuits and even had the help of a caution with two laps remaining. But Grenier was not to be denied. Finishing behind Grenier and Fleury, who was coming off a victory in the third Series race last Thursday at Thunder Road (Barre, VT), was Mark Barnier in third. Doug Murphy and Jamy Begor of Mooers Forks, NY completed the top five. Rounding out the top ten were Chuck Beede, Joe Steffen, Kerry Henry, Ray Stearns and Joe Tetreault. Fleury's second place finish in the Ferguson Waterworks 50, coupled with his win three days before, vaulted him from third, past Jason Bonnet and Robin Wood. His lead is three points over Doug Murphy who moved from fourth into second with his finish at Canaan. Bonnett, the point leader entering Canaan drops to fifth following a "DNF" (did not finish) as a result of an engine failure and former runner-up Wood now finds himself in third. Eric Johnson won the Allen Lumber Street Stock's 30 lap Ferguson Waterworks main event. Joe Small and Alex Perkins completed the top ten.
