PARK HILLS, MO. - Police said Sunday a 47-year-old man was killed and two other injured Saturday night when a race car flipped off the track and slammed into the pit area at St. Francois County Raceway. Police withheld the man's identity, saying they weren't sure whether his nearest relatives had been notified. Two others also were injured, including the driver of the race car that lost control. The race car driver, Tommy Worley Jr., 40, was taken to an area hospital with non life-threatening injuries. Police said he suffered some broken bones. Worley could not immediately be reached for comment. Another man, who police said is in his 30s, was seriously hurt and flown by helicopter to St. John's Hospital in Washington, Mo., for treatment. Park Hills Police Officer Fabian McRaven said the crash happened during a sprint car race at the track about 8:30 p.m. Worley's car clipped another race car while trying to make a pass around a turn, McRaven said. The impact sent Worley's car sailing over a barricade of large tractor tires and through a fence, hitting the two men at the entrance from the pits onto the track. "It was just a horrible racing accident," McRaven said. The man who was killed was a pit crew member for another driver, McRaven said. The track promoters could not be reached Sunday.
