Barre, VT – Race fans and officials will honor the four defending Thunder Road Track Champions during the annual “Class Day” ceremonies as Barre’s Thunder Road opens its 46th stock car racing season Sunday, May 1 with the Merchants Bank 150.
Cris Michaud of Williamstown is the defending “King of the Road” in the ACT Late Model division, and will carry Merchants Bank colors on his Jeff Laquerre-maintained automobile in 2005. Island Pond’s Reno Gervais will begin his quest for three straight NAPA Tiger Sportsman titles, an unprecedented feat in the division since its inception in 1982.
Joe Small of Milton, who recently announced that he will use an Ethanol fuel in 2005, is the defending Allen Lumber Street Stock Champion. Small will face the challenges of hometown driver Ron Gabaree, who has moved up to the Street Stocks after winning the Power Shift Junkyard Warrior title last season.
In an event unique to Thunder Road, all drivers in each division will bring their cars – over 100 in total – to the infield grass for the annual “Class Day” photos and presentations. Battle flags bearing the car numbers and team colors of each champion driver will be raised to fly throughout the 2005 season on Thunder Road’s Forsythe Hill in Turn 3. The Top 3 finishers in each division from Saturday’s Merchants Bank Car Show will also be selected and given awards for their efforts in preparing their brand new machinery.
“Class Day” ceremonies kick off Thunder Road’s Sun., May 1 program at 1:00pm. Green flag qualifying action for the Merchants Bank 150 begins at 1:30pm. The Merchants Bank Car Show will be held on Main Street in Barre City from 9:00am-Noon on Sat., April 30, with a Pit Stop Contest at 10:30am.
