MEDIA PICKS MACDONALD TO WIN AT LEE NH GOVERNORS CUP
For Immediate Release - ACT 041609-16
Waterbury, VT The Northeast Media have picked the outlaw, Eddie MacDonald of Rowley, MA to win the New Hampshire Governors Cup 150 this weekend at the Lee USA Speedway.
The contest, conducted by the American Canadian Tour sanctioning body, (ACT) asked media from throughout the Northeast to send in their picks for those drivers they think will qualify for the inaugural ACT INVITATIONAL Late Model event to be held this September at New Englands only Super-Speedway, the New Hampshire Motor Speedway (NHMS).
The deadline for entries is in and the media from the Northeast and Canada have entered 104 names of potential winners who might be eligible to compete at the ACT INVITATIONAL!MacDonald, a full-time NASCAR Camping World East driver, was the consensus pick to win the opening event of the season, followed closely by the defending champion of the New Hampshire Governors Cup, Joey Polarwarczyk of Hudson, New Hampshire. The two drivers duked it out in the 100-lap version of the NH Governors Cup last season, with MacDonald running down a dominant performance by Pole in the final laps. MacDonald said, I think we might have been able to catch up to Joey, but I am not sure we could have gotten past him for the win. Of course, he might have been saving it a little, he had a pretty good lead on the field with 20 laps to go.Over 50 of the best Late Model drivers in New England and Canada are expected to try to qualify for the 30 spots in Sundays 150 lap quest for the NH Governors Cup. Pole said, I cant think of a better way to start the ACT season than to win the New Hampshire Governors Cup back-to-back. I especially want to get the NHMS Qualifer off my to do list as early as possible. My team has talked about how good Eddie (MacDonald) is at Lee--actually, everywhere he races with us--but we are focused, and I like the 150 laps instead of 100. He (MacDonald) probably does too, but I am confident and excited about getting the 2009 season started.
The media also did their homework. There was a four-way tie among drivers who received the most votes to win a qualified spot in a race that has quickly captured the imagination of the Northeast and Canadian short track race teams and fans. The four teams tied at the top of the media favorite list to get qualified out of the 100 plus picks were: Brent Dragon and Scott Payea of Milton, VT, Patrick Laperle defending ACT Champion from Montreal, Quebec, and Joey Pole.
Phase one of the contest will run from the opening event at the Lee New Hampshire speedplant beginning April 19 until mid-September, just prior to the annual NASCAR Cup weekend at NHMS, when the Late Models will have their first-ever event at the magic mile. Media who pick the top 36 Late Model teams who qualify either by winning a race on the American Canadian Tour, the Série ACT Castrol, which runs races throughout the season in Quebec and Ontario, or track champion candidates from the ACT affiliate weekly tracks that are part of the ACT program, will become eligible for a weeks vacation prize at one of New Hampshires favorite resorts.
Media members who end up in the top twelve in standings at the conclusion of phase one will then have a chance to pick the winner of the 50 mile ACT INVITATIONAL in phase two. The media winner will have an all- expense paid trip for two to Lowes Motor Speedway, in Concord, North Carolina for the Bank of America 500 in October.
Members of the media will have some pressure themselves this race season. Each week there will be championship point standings for the media. Pick the winner and earn 10 points. There are also bonus races for bonus points including the TD Bank 250 at Oxford, ME; Fall Foliage 300 at the new Airborne Speedway in Plattsburgh, NY; the Sizzler 200 at Kawartha Speedway in Ontario; Center of Speed 300 Late Model portion at Wiscasset Speedway in Maine, along with several other select events. Follow the media contest standings on the ACT web site at www.acttour.com.
Following the opening race at Lee USA, the ACT Tour will move to Thunder Road to open its 50th season with the 11th edition of the Merchants Bank 150 on Sunday, May 3, 2009. There will be the traditional 100+ race car show in downtown Barre on Saturday morning, followed by the race car parade up Route 14 and Quarry Hill into Thunder Road.

NASCARS Tony Stewart Excited about Thunder Road Governors Cup
For Immediate Release - ACT 060809-22
Barre, VT NASCAR Sprint Cup point leader Tony Stewart told GWC blogger Travis Barrett at Dover, Delaware last week that he is excited about his upcoming June 25th visit to Thunder Road. Stewart will compete in the CARQUEST Governors Cup 150 with 30 of the best Late Model teams of the American Canadian and Thunder Road regulars.
Stewart, coming off his first NASCAR Sprint Cup victory as a car owner at Pocono Raceway last Sunday, is now perhaps the premiere racing star of the NASCAR Cup circuit. Stewart transcends old school drivers like Dale Earnhardt, Rusty Wallace and Darrell Waltrip and the new breed drivers like Carl Edwards, the Busch brothers and Jimmy Johnson. Stewart has raced in multiple disciplines of racecars, including Indy open wheel cars, sprint cars, and all forms of stock cars. He has made it clear to track owners that he is coming to Thunder Road to race.
The appearance by Stewart at Thunder Road will highlight the tracks 50th Anniversary season. Thunder Road would appear to fit Tony Stewarts passionate love for racing like a glove. Tough and challenging, lots of history, heavy-duty competition, along with avid and knowledgeable race fans ---- Tony Stewart is expected to have a lot of fun at the CARQUEST Governors Cup 150. Thunder Road is selling a 50th Anniversary souvenir ticket to mark the special occasion. Stewart will attempt to be the first non-Vermont driver to take the Cup out of the home state. With the appearance of Tony Stewart competing in the Governors Cup, Thunder Road has expanded its parking lot to nearly double the size of the main lot. In anticipation of this historic night of racing, Thunder Road has added another 500 seats to the already largest spectator venue in the state of Vermont. The local divisions will share the spotlight at the Governors Cup and will run extended lap features only on race night.
Stewart will be driving an American Canadian Tour (ACT) Late Model car prepared by Joey Pole Racing (JPR) from Hudson, New Hampshire. Stewart will drive the same car that Joey Polewarczyk, Jr. drove to the pole position in the Chittenden Milk Bowl in 2008. We have spent a lot of time since March getting this car as near perfect as we can for Tony Stewart. He is definitely our kind of racer, and I think he will be pleased with the car. Actually, our team is as excited about watching him race at Thunder Road as we are at getting the car set up for him. It will be a real experience for Joey to be able to tell NASCAR Cup Champion Tony Stewart how to get around Thunder Road!! We cant wait to meet him and share a few laughs, said Joe Pole, Sr.
The 50th Anniversary CARQUEST Governors Cup 150 will post $3,000 to win and the best of Thunder Road and ACT teams will be looking to lock up a qualified spot in the ACT INVITATIONAL to be held on September 19 at the New Hampshire Motor Speedway. The Governors Cup winner will join all ACT Tour winners, ACT Castrol Series winners, and other invited teams to participate in the inaugural 50-mile ACT Invitational at the New Hampshire Motor Speedway on Saturday, September 19 during the NASCAR Chase weekend. This will be the first time local Late Model teams will have a chance to race at the only Super Speedway in New England. If Tony wins the Governors Cup, the JPR car will be waiting for him at NHMS if he wants to have some Saturday fun, said Joe Pole, Now that would be something to see if he decides he wants to show us around the magic mile.
Gates will open at Thunder Road on June 25th at 4 PM; post time is scheduled for 6 PM. The CARQUEST Governors Cup 150 is slated to begin at 8PM. Advanced tickets for the Governors Cup are now on sale at only $17 for Adults and day of race tickets will be sold at $20. Childrens (6-12) tickets are $5, under 6 are admitted free. LAPERLE FIRST ENTRY FOR CARQUEST VERMONT GOVERNORS CUP
For Immediate Release - ACT 061609-24
Waterbury, VT The American Canadian Tour (ACT) defending Champion Patrick Laperle from St Denis, Quebec has entered the CARQUEST Vermont Governors Cup 150 on June 25th at Thunder Road International Speedbowl in Barre, VT. Laperle not only won his first ACT US title at the ¼ mile bullring in 2008, but he has a knack for winning the big shows at what many call the toughest quarter mile in America. Laperle is defending Champion of the 2008 Chittenden Milk Bowl, which he also won in 2006.
The challenge to race against one of NASCARs greatest drivers, Tony Stewart, who will also compete in one of the most exciting 150 lap events of the season on Thursday, June 25th was just what the JPN Laperle Racing team enjoys. I cant wait to race against Tony Stewart. My brother and I are huge fans of his and this is going to be one of my best racing memories. The idea that I can just race and not worry about ACT Série Castrol points or anything like that is what I love to do. I hope we come to the wire side-by-side for the win after 149 laps. It would be the thrill of a lifetime, said Patrick Laperle.
The unexpected entry by Laperle, who is trying to repeat winning the Série ACT Castrol in 2009 having taken the crown in 2007, will strengthen an already star-studded field of racers who would like to have the record book show they raced and beat the NASCAR Cup Champion. Laperle makes it eight (8) former Thunder Road Champions who will be entering the field of 30 cars for what will undoubtedly be one of the most anticipated events in the long 50-year history of Thunder Road. Joining Laperle will be Kings of the Road: 2008 Eric Williams, 2007 David Pembroke (already a winner at Thunder Road this year by winning the Memorial Day Classic for the second time), 2005, 2004 and 2001 winner Cris Michaud, 2003 Jamie Fisher, three-time champion Phil Scott, the 1999 winner Brian Hoar and 1995 champion Dave Whitcomb who all are expected to try to qualify for the historic event.
Stewart will drive a car that sat on the pole for the 2008 Milk Bowl, prepared by Joey Pole Racing (JPR). Joey Polewarczyk will also field his own ACT Late Model in the CARQUEST Governors Cup. He said, I just think it will be neat to race against Tony Stewart. We were so happy to be able to supply him with our second car, and now to race against him is unbelievable. He is going to love the crowd at Thunder Road, the atmosphere and the competition, but I am not sure he is going to be any happier about turn 4 than Ken Schrader or Kenny Wallace were over the past couple years. Nobody knows better than me how challenging that place can be, but I love it and hope I can get a few laps of serious racing in with Tony.
Darla Hartt, the Vice President of ACT and General Manager of Thunder Road said, Advanced ticket sales have been great since we made them available over Memorial Day weekend. Tony Stewart has held up his end of the bargain with his great run to the front of the NASCAR Cup standings, I am sure our great fans at Thunder Road will come out in full force to watch him take on our regulars.
Stewart, who owns Eldora Speedway in Ohio, which is one of Americas great dirt tracks, has heard a lot about Thunder Road, and his good friend Ken Schrader has encouraged him to visit the Nations Site of Excitement. We are going to be proud to show off Thunder Road and her great fans as we believe Thunder Road is one of Americas great asphalt short tracks. We still have lots of tickets available, and although we expect a big crowd, we have additional parking and will have additional rest room facilitiesit should be quite a night and it is fitting that Governor Jim Douglas will be handing out the Governors Cupit has never left Vermont over all these yearsI hope it is a great race, but as a native Vermonter, I kind of hope the Cup stays in the Green Mountains, continued Hartt.
The CARQUEST Vermont Governors Cup tickets are on sale at advanced discount prices. Adults are only $17 in advance and can be purchased at the ACT office 802-244-6963, or may be picked up at the race track during the first two Thursday night events scheduled for June 11, and June 18.
