Now with all that out of the way.....Let's make some laps!
The starting field of 42 came to the green flag. The top 5 were:
Ramo Stott<Norris Reed chevy>
Terry Ryan <Wam Racing Chevy>
Dave Marcis <K&K Insurance Dodge>
Darrel Waltrip <Digard Chevy>
Buddy Baker <Bud Moore Ford>
The reason for a default front row was because the top 3 qualifier's times were disallowed.....(if anyone knows why they were DQ'd, please post.) The race started with Buddy Baker coming from his 5th place starting position to the lead on lap 1 through 4, Pearson took the lead from lap 5 to 6, then Baker on lap 7 to 11, Baker was one of the 1st big names to fall out with a blown motor on lap 83 after leading 26 laps. Darrell Waltrip fell out 4 laps later due to a blown motor also. At the halfway point just 30 out of the 42 that started were running, Bobby Allison driving the Roger Penske Mercury fell out on lap 123 for another blown engine. As of lap 150, there was 19 cars running and gearing up for the finish, 2 cars were on the lead lap, Richard Petty and David Pearson who swapped the lead back and forth until the end of the race. As the 2 legendary drivers went for the 2 laps to go sign, The attendance of 140,000 would about be seeing one of the MOST DRAMATIC Daytona 500's ever as the 2 went to the homestretch, Petty fishtailed and lost it, slamming into the wall and collecting Pearson. The 2 drivers spun down the front stretch and Petty's car stopped just 150 feet short of the start finish line. Pearson coasted under the checker flag and won the 1976 Daytona 500 There is more to this story. Petty's crew proceeded to push the car across the line. Because the rule stipulates that NO CREW MEMBER UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES shall push the car across the line, Petty was scored with 199 out of the 200 laps. Famous Quotes after the race: Petty : "My car broke loose, the 1st time we hit it was my fault, I told David i was sorry it happened." Pearson : "I'm not sure what happened, He went beneath me and and his car broke loose, I got into the wall and came off and hit him."

This is from Craig Schmidt that brought this to my attention, The reason of the top 3 getting DQED, This is from Sports Illustrated thanks again :)
"A week before the race, the top three qualifiers had their times disallowed because of cheating. A.J. Foyt had his pole-winning speed of 187.477 mph thrown out after NASCAR officials found sufficient evidence of the use of nitrous oxide--the "laughing gas" that dentists had used for decades--to enhance the combustion on Foyt's Chevy during his qualifying run. Fiery young Darrell Waltrip, the second fastest, was next to be disqualified, after he admitted to concealing his own nitrous oxide bottle. Dave Marcis, the third fastest, was disqualified because of an illegal blockage of his radiator (intended to increase downforce and engine temperature) by his top mechanic, Harry Hyde, who 14 years later would be portrayed by Robert Duvall as the craftiest crew chief of them all, Harry Hogge, in the film Days of Thunder.
Foyt, in particular, was furious over the disqualifications. At one point, he was seen angrily lecturing NASCAR president Bill France Jr. Things got so ugly in the garage area that former NASCAR czar Bill France Sr., who had retired four years earlier, had to be called in to restore order. "[George] Wallace told me to make sure all these sonsabitches are legal by the time he gets here," the elder France said of the Alabama governor, his longtime friend who was to serve as grand marshal of the race, "and I'm gonna do just that. Right now."
Ten minutes later, the old man emerged from behind closed doors with his arm around the neck of a suddenly compliant Foyt, who was saying softly, "Yessir...yessir...yessir"
Thanks for the expanded info. it was driving me crazy that I couldn't find out anywhere, why the times were disallowed. I hope that you will do a couple more of these flashbacks for us! I personlly can't wait for the 2005 racing season to begin. Sunday's just aren't the same.
during racing season VS. during the off season!
