(Naples, ME September 17, 2007) Now in only its third year, the PASS 400 Weekend brought to you by Richard Moody & Sons Construction, Norway Savings Bank, and Pullen Heavy Industries at Beech Ridge Motor Speedway, Scarborough, ME is rapidly becoming the biggest race event in Northern New England. There will be over 300 race teams competing over the four days from Thursday night September 20th to the big $10,000 to win DJ Equipment PASS North Super Late Model 300 green-flag lap race on Sunday afternoon, but, more importantly, its the names of the racers who choose to race PASS that make this the areas biggest show. Its a Whos Who of local racing.
In the PASS North Super Late Model 300 qualifying heats on Saturday the 22nd and in the 300 lapper on Sunday afternoon the 23rd, race fans will see Ben Rowe, Johnny Clark, Mike Rowe, Richie Dearborn, Travis Benjamin, Kelly Moore, Brad Leighton, Dave Dion, Cassius Clark, Alan Wilson, Rick Martin, Gary Smith, and a host of Beech Ridge favorites like Bub Bilodeau, Dan McKeage, Alan Tardif, Curtis Gerry, Billy Rodgers, Donnie Whitten, Kevin Kimball, Mike Fowler, among others.
And how about the under 20 crowd, Trevor Sanborn, Derek Ramstrom, and Adam Bates are currently fifth, seventh, and eighth in the PASS North points chase. And dont forget Joey Porciello, Jeremie Whorff, and Stephen Berry as part of the young guns chasing the frontrunners in the big fast Super Late Models.
The PASS Outlaw Late Models are full of names you know Last years winner Dennis Spencer will be back to defend his title, 2006 Central Division Champion Jimmy Rosenfield, 2006 North Division Champion Matt Lee, Alan Wilson, Walt Hammond, Jay Sands, Mike Harnish, Brian Whitney, Mike Thomas, Tony Ricci in the Mulkern car, Busch North fan favorite Carey Heath, Charlie and Chuck Colby, Donnie Lashua, Mike Fowler, and many more will be there. And it will be another barnburner as they go at it for 75 green-flag laps in the Norway Savings Bank 75 for $2,000 to win or $1,000 and transfer to the PASS 300 that pays $1000 to start. Either way, the winner takes home $2,000 . . . but has a chance for more if he or she transfers.
Several drivers are going to do double duty in both the Outlaws and the Super Late Models Mike Fowler, Jay Sands, Alan Wilson and several others have indicated their plans for the big weekend include both races.
The PASS Modified Division will be going at it for 40 green-flag laps in the Price-Rite Fuels 40 on Sunday afternoon. Chris Staples of Brunswick, ME holds a 49 point lead over Troy Morse of Bridgton, ME with Mark Lucas of Harpswell, ME only five markers behind Morse as the season moves into the homestretch. Chris Smith of Scarborough has been Mr. Steady with four thirds in nine races and has a solid hold on fourth in the points. However, the big winners in 2007 have been Gary Norris, Jr of W. Gardner, ME and Jason Taylor of Searsmont, ME with three wins each. With only three races left, its far from over if Norris and Taylor keep up their winning ways, but Staples, Morse, and Lucas are no rookies with a host of wins up and down the state of Maine.
Some of the best short track racing this year has been in the new PASS Pullen Sportsman Series featuring some of New Englands best Limited, Sportsman, Street Stock, and Super Street racers. Cole Watson of Naples, ME dominated last years Wildcat 75 with Dan Wink of N. Berwick, Billy Childs, Jr of Leeds, and Brian Caswell of Buxton right behind. But this is a different year, and with more than fifty cars expected for the Victory Lane Indoor Karting 75, someone will surely surprise these top runners in the Saturday afternoon/evening show along with the T & K and Sons Concrete Roadrunner 25. An Action Filled Thursday Night of PASS 400 Weekend at Beech Ridge
(Naples, ME September 21, 2007) The New England Dodge Dealers Mid-Week Series Finale drew 124 cars for the four 50 lap features to kick off the PASS 400 Weekend on Thursday night at Beech Ridge Motor Speedway, Scarborough, ME.
The Trucks were the first of four 50 lap features, and the #24 of Ray Letellier of Buxton, ME jumped out to the early lead, but it was Marvin Hamilton of New Gloucester, ME who was coming like a banshee on the outside. He made it to second by lap 15, but at the halfway mark it was still Letellier with the #1 Tony Field of Buxton second, Hamilton third, Ryan Farrar of Oxford, ME fourth in the #69, and Matt Dow of Buxton in the #84 rounding out the top five.
Field and Hamilton swapped second a few times on restarts, and Hamilton finally got by Letellier on a restart going into turn one and puts it in cruise around the bottom. But Field wasnt done. And with ten to go Field was right on Hamiltons back bumper, but Hamilton was committed to the bottom and wasnt going to move.
With one to go, Field drove it in hard on the outside of turn one with a lapped car in the middle with Hamilton on the bottom. Coming out of turn two they were still three wide, and Field bounced it off the back stretch wall. He kept his foot in it into turn three and took the checkers. Hamilton was second, Letellier third, Farrar fourth, and Matt Dow of Buxton in the #84 rounding out the top five.
The 350s were next up for their 50 lapper. Nick Coates of Turner, ME took the #12 to the front quickly. On lap six, the #18 of Carl McAlpine of Burham, ME went around Coates for the lead, but it was Richard Spaulding of Lisbon, ME in the yellow #36 using the high groove like Hamilton in the Trucks to get to the front.
But it all came to an abrupt stop on lap 11 as a back marker dumped oil from turn three through turn four, and everyone of the leaders went spinning as the yellow flew. McAlpine recovered quickly and stayed in the lead, but Spaulding knocked the front bumper off and had to pit along with several others.
At halfway, McAlpine was gone. In fact, so far gone he got DQd in post race inspection. By lap 35, Spaulding was up to fourth after working his way from the back after his lap 11 visit to the pits. At lap 40, he was third and at lap 45 he was second. He finally caught McAlpine but it was in the tech line. Spaulding was declared the winner, with the #19 of Steve Moon of Gray, ME #12 second, the #12 of Coates second, third, Tim Hatch of Standish, ME in the #58, and Jeremy Leavitt of Poland, ME rounding out the top five.
The 305s were next up for their 50 green-flag laps. The 28 cars took the green, and the #11 of Craig Smith of Waterboro, ME took the point and held the lead over the # 22 of Todd Lovejoy of Kennebunk, ME through a series of yellows. The #4 of Adam Ricci of Westbrook, Me got into the mix by halfway along with the #6 of Robert Williams of Limington, Me.
After a caution on lap 38, Ricci and Lovejoy swapped second back and forth through a couple of yellows, but it was still the #11 of Smith out front.
With two to go, Lovejoy finally got to Smith and pinned him behind a lapped car. Lovejoy pulled away out of turn two and took the win. Smith held on for second, with Ricci third, Williams fourth, and Dana Bean of Alfred, ME fifth.
Thirty three stock 4s took the green in the final 50 lapper of the night. It didnt take long for the fireworks to begin with a multiple car spin in turn one on lap 4. However, things settled down for a while and Mark Childs, Jr of Mechanic Falls, ME was out front with #521 of Scott Farrington of Minot, ME second and the #54 Kyle Hewins of Leeds, ME third.
At the halfway mark, it was still Childs, with Hewins now second, Farrington third, and Josh Childs of Oxford, ME in the #3 fourth. A caution on lap 33 gave Hewins in the $54 a chance for the lead and he took into turn one side by side with Childs, Jr and came out of turn two with the lead.
However, Hewins trip to the front was short lived as the #3 of Childs (not Jr) took the lead on lap 35 and pulled away over the final 15 laps. The #521 of Farrington was second, Hewins third, Childs Jr in the #95 fourth, and the #119 of Greg Norton of Lewiston, ME fifth.
If Thursday nights action was any indication of the racing fans will see on Saturday and Sunday, it will be quite a show. There were over 180 cars in the pits for practice day on Friday. Saturday is qualifying day for the PASS Super Late Models, Outlaw Late Models, Modifieds, Sportsman, Wildcats, and Roadrunners. Saturday will also feature the Victory Lane Indoor Karting Wildcat 75 lap feature and the T & K and Sons Concrete Roadrunner 25. On Sunday, its the PASS North Super Late Models in the 300 green-flag lap DJ Equipment 300, the Outlaw Late Models in the Norway Savings Bank 75, the PASS Modifieds in the Price-Rite Fuels 40, and the PASS Sportsman in the Pullen Heavy Industries 100.
PASS 400 Weekend Wildcat and Roadrunner Saturday Feature Results
(Naples, ME September 23, 2007) Saturday was qualifying day for all six divisions plus the Roadrunner and Wildcat features.
In the T & K and Sons Concrete 25, it was Edward Pierce in the #77 of Alfred, Me taking off to an early lead, but Tim Caswell of Waterboro in the #47 soon tracked him down and took the lead.Caswell held off Pierce and a hard charging Todd Lefebvre of Gorham in the #26 to take the win. Shawn bracket of Gray was fourth in the #31, and David Palmer of Waterboro brought the #01 home fifth.
The Wildcats rolled out of the pits after the field of 53 cars was thinned down to the 31 qualifiers in a series of five heat races for the Victory Lane Indoor Karting 75. Dan Wink of N. Berwick, ME finished second in the 2006 Wildcat feature and was looking to go one better this time. He put his win in the first heat to good use as he lead from the pole and moved out to a two car lead in the first few laps.
However, his lead soon went away as a big pileup off turn two put six cars into the backstretch wall.On the restart, Wink again took off with the #90 of Dickie Randall of Limington right behind. By lap 10, Dave Brannon of Lisbon in the #14, the 2006 Wiscasset Raceway champion, joined the top two.
On lap 20, something on the #12 of Skip Tripp of Lisbon broke and oiled down turn one sending cars scattering over the banking and through the infield. After a caution on lap 33 for a one car spin in turn one, the #03 of Maurice Young of Windsor made his way to second past Randall who got caught on the outside and was freight-trained back to fourth.
The top four were moving away from the field as the reached the halfway mark. On lap 41 Randall took third back from Brannon as the top four were cruising nose to tail, and by lap 50 Alby Ovitt of Barrington, NH in the #35 came from deep in the field to join the fray.
As the laps wound down everyone was waiting for someone to make a move to challenge Wink, but they were all afraid of getting caught on the outside like Randall did earlier. However, as we got to lap 65, Ovitt, the #27 of Kenny Harrison of Freeport, ME, the #113 of Tommy Tompkins of Carthage had joined the parade at the front.
With ten laps to go, it was Wink, Young, Randall, Brannon, Ovitt, Harrison, and Tompkins. Ovitt decided it was time to go and made a move to the outside on Brannon which allowed Harrison and Tompkins to slip by Ovitt on the inside. Meanwhile, up front Young was knocking on Winks bumper as they came down the backstretch with two to go, but Wink had enough left to hold young off and take the win. Young was second, followed by Brannon, Randall, Harrison, Tompkins,Ovitt, David Wildes of Limington in the #29 was eighth, Ronnie Carbeil, Jr of E. Waterboro in the 12X ninth, and Michael Poole of Hollis in the #0 rounded out the top ten.

The PASS 400 Weekend is Sometimes Unpredictable
(Naples, ME September 23, 2007) Where to begin. There were so many story lines on the biggest day of the PASS 400 Weekend at Beech Ridge Motor Speedway.
The young guns were out in force for the DJ Equipment 300 PASS North Super Late Models with 16 year-old D J Shaw on the pole in the #60 and a slightly older Mike Fowler in the 66X on the outside as the 33 car field took the green. The first three cars on the outside row were all PASS Outlaw competitors with Donnie Lashuas #21 and Jay Sands in the #36 lined up behind Fowler.
Another of the young guns, 16 year-old Derek Ramstrom in the #35, who started 31st, saw his day get off to a bad start as a tire problem on lap 3 saw him around in turn one and going a lap down. On the plus side, he had 297 laps to make it up.
On lap 20, Joey Porciello in the #04 started to fall back with the beginnings of engine troubles that plagued him all day. At the 30 lap mark, it was young Shaw escorted by his dad Dale in the #23, a fast charging #47 of Kelly Moore, Fowler, and Ben Rowes #4.
Kelly Moore took the lead on lap 47 with Ben following him through, and at the 50 lap mark it was Moore, Ben Rowe, DJ, Dad, Mike Rowe, Fowler, and another young gun in 19 year-old Adam Bates in the #98.
After a quick caution on lap 57, Ben and Mike Rowe took the top two spots, with Moore falling briefly to third, but by lap 74 Kelly had the #47 back in the groove and he took the lead again with Ben Rowe next. The #47 was not great on the restarts, but after several laps he was flying. On lap 80, Fowler had a flat right front under green, ending a promising day.
Cassius Clark in the #8 arrived in the top five before the 90 lap mark from his 20th-place start and was going to be a presence for the rest of the day. At the 100 lap mark, it was Ben, Cassius, Kelly, and the two youngsters Bates and Shaw in the top five.
Cassius took the lead on lap 116, but Kelly took it back on lap 120 as the leaders swapped the lead several times. A caution on lap #138 for a single car spin lead to a round of pit stops that juggled the top runners, and at the 150 lap mark it was Mike Rowe, Ben, DJ, Travis Benjamin in the #17, Cassius, Kirk Thibeau in the #28, Johnny Clark in the #54, and the 2007 Beech Ridge Pro Stock Champion Bub Bilodeau in the #9.
Kelly Moore made his way back to the front and took the lead again on lap 176, but 20 laps later his day came to end when he got caught in a turn one tangle not of his making with the #17 of Travis Benjamin, the #33 of Richie Dearborn who had made his way from 29th on the grid, and Johnny Clark who was an unwilling participant. Both Moore and Clark were done for the day with major damage, but the others were able to continue.
It took him almost 200 laps, but Derek Ramstrom was the recipient of the lucky dog after working his way into the top ten runners from the back after the lap three troubles. He refueled, changed tires and was back on the lead lap.
With the race two thirds done, it was Benjamin, Steve Berry in the #15, Mike Rowe, and John Flemming from Halifax, NS in the #97 the top five. On lap 209, Mike powered past Berry for the lead but this twosome was not done yet.
With 50 to go, it was Mike, Berry, Benjamin, Alan Wilson in his #53 Outlaw car Cassius Clark, and Ramstrom who had passed a ton of cars after the pit stop and was solidly in the top ten, with Scott Chubbuck in the #77 and Dearborns #33 next.
On lap 259, Porciellos engine finally gave it up as he slowed in turn one. On the restart, Berry took the lead from Mike but Mike fought back and retook the lead a few laps later.
Rowe and Berry ran side by side for several laps with one or the other being the leader at the line as the race wound down. Berry lost a tire in turn four on lap 280 after side-to-side contact with Rowe ending what was a great showing by this up and coming team from Gorham, ME.
On the restart, it was the #2 of Mike, Cassius in the #8 with no power steering for over 200 laps, Wilson, and Ramstrom. On lap 288, Ramstrom went around Cassius for third.
Over the final ten laps, the fans were cheering for fan favorite and ultimate low bucker Alan Wilson in the #53 and Ramstrom in the #35 who fought his way back from a lap down early.
A final caution on lap 293 saw Dave Dion around off the bumper of Ben Rowe on the frontstretch in front of the entire crowd, and Ben being sent to the back and Dion recovering to go on.
Wilson tried Mike on the outside on the restart, but it was Mikes day as he brought the P T Watts #2 home for the $10,000 winners share.Wilson and Ramstrom joined Rowe on the podium.Cassius Clark held on for fourth, Trevor Sanborn in the #29, another of the young crowd, came from 30th and ran a steady race to take fifth, Dearborn was solidly in sixth, Scott Chubbuck was seventh, Kirk Thibeau was eighth, and Rick Martin rounded out the unofficial top ten.
When the PASS Outlaw Late Models took the track for the Norway Savings Bank 100 lap tussle, up from the scheduled 75 lap race, it was the first the fans heard of the added 25 laps and they responded with cheers. The race got off to a stop and go start as the #2 of Charlie Colby was sent to the back for a false start when he went and polesitter J. R Baril in the #58 didnt. On the restart Baril went out quickly to the lead followed by Joe Decker in the #01, but Barils time out front didnt last long as Decker took the lead on lap seven.
Things settled down with Decker and Baril out front followed by the #44 of Jimmy Rosenfield and the #84 of Tony Ricci right behind. A series of quick spins slowed the race through the first 40 laps,
At halfway, it was still Decker, Baril, Chris Staples in the #5 up to third, Mike Fowler in the 66, followed by Rosenfield, Katie Hagar in the #14, Alan Wilson in the #53, and Walt Hammond in the #97. After a caution on lap 51, Baril took off again as he had a great car on restarts, and Ricci went by Decker for second.
Baril and Ricci swapped the lead with Decker always right there over the next twenty laps with out any one getting more than car length ahead. On lap 75, it was Baril, Ricci, Decker, Rosenfield, Staples, and Wilson.
On lap 95, Baril again took off on the restart, but this time Ricci was right there as the two went at it over the final five laps. As they came to the checkers, Ricci made one last move to the outside, but Baril held him off for the win by a few feet, with Decker, Staples, and Rosenfield right behind.
The PASS Pullen Sportsman were next up for their 100 lap feature. The cousins Dan McKeage in the #38 and Mike Landry in the #40 shared the top spot over the first 20 laps as Landrys car just wouldnt go for several laps, but then he would be right there with McKeage for the lead. The family affair went on until Terry Merrill in the #36 got by Landry for second on lap 25, and Merrill took the lead on a lap 46 restart.
Just after the halfway mark Landrys car came to life as it did on the long runs and took the lead on the outside of Merrill on lap 53, and Shane Tatros 7 moved up to third n lap 58 with the #48 of Jerry Harrison making his first appearance at the front of the field.
Landry started to stretch out his lead as traffic held up the next four cars, but a blown engine in the #24 of Marty Adamson lap 84 oiled down turn three and brought the field back together.
On the restart, it was Landry again falling back as Merrill took the point, but with ten to go Landry was back up to speed and challenging Merrill for the lead. At lap 92, Landry went by Merrill and made it to the checkers before another caution would ruin his day. However, post race tech did ruin Landrys day and Merrill was credited with the win. Followed by Tatro, McKeage,Harrison, Chris warming in the #5W, Nate Weston in the #47, Kurt Hewins in the #55, Sally Gherardi in the #77, and Jeff Cannell in the #26.
The PASS Modifieds were next up for the Price-Rite Fuel 50 lap feature. The #01 of Ron Gooden, Jr and the #66 of Tim Churchill brought the 18 car field to the green. A scary pile up in turn three brought out the caution as the #6 of Troy Morse and the #85 ended up off tune three with Morse getting some air before landing on all four wheels.
On lap 12, Chris Smith in the #1 used his local knowledge of the Beech Ridge track to take the lead with Jason Taylor in the #8 right behind. At halfway, it was still Smith, Taylor, with the #33 of Bill Dixon, the #34 of Richie Morse, and the #29 of Greg Ellis fifth in his rest run of the year.
From there on it was Smith all the way to the checkers for the rookie win, with Taylor next, Tom Oliver in the #63, Chris Staples #5, and Ellis fifth.
