Two of the greatest names in New England motor sports history will be remembered Friday night when the fastest short track race cars in the world, the ultra powered, fire breathing, 900 horse powered supermodifieds of the International Super Modified Association come to New Hampshire to the Lee USA Speedway, Lee, NH for the 6th annual Ollie Silva Memorial Summer Classic, a 75 lap race honoring the late New England Racing Hall of Fame member. Silva, considered by many to be one of the greatest short track racers in American motor sports history, was best known for his success as a super modified racer. Winner of races from Canada, to Florida, to California, Silva was best known for his colorful driving style and his back of the pack charges no matter where he raced. Silva passed away two years ago.
In addition, this Fridays race will honor the winner of the NESMRA Classic, a 100 lap super modified race forty years ago this summer. North Billerica,MA; legend Bud Crotty roared to victory at the Rte 125 tri-oval. In honor of his fathers moment in super modified history, Crottys son Everett has been named Grand Marshall for the race. Hell also serve as honorary flagman and will make trophy presentations at the conclusion of the event. Many drivers from that era are expected to be on hand for the special night, a yearly tradition at the NASCAR sanctioned speedway..
Local fans can expect to see a number of drivers and teams with roots in New England. Rowley, MA; hot shoe Chris Perley will be on hand driving Vic Millers potent # 11 car based in Atkinson,NH. Speedway regulars Super Dave Sanborn, Tilton, NH, are entered as is second generation driver Mike Ordway Jr. Fremont, NH. Hell be driving the Haverhill, MA; based supermodified owned and prepared by Haverhill firefighter Rick Wentworth. Perley was victorious at Mansfiled, OH; this past weekend. Ordway finished fourth and Sanborn sixteenth.
Essex,MA; veteran driver/owner Howie Lane will field an entry this weekend with Rob Summers,Vernon,CT; slated to drive, Ipswich,MA; veteran Scott Martel, Haverhills Justin Belfiore, and North Andover, MA; driver Jamie Timmons are expected as well as New Jersey drivers Joey The Jet Payne, former winner Nokie Fornoro, along with Canadian hot shoes Mark Sammut and Dave McKnight are expected.
In addition to the ISMA special, the track NASCAR Whelen All- American Series is also scheduled. Late Models, Late Model Sportsman, Hobby Stocks, Roadrunners, and small block supers will be on hand. Race time is 7:15 PM.
